Is it better to live in the North or South….?

Chav Girl may be heading saaarf….
There is a possible job change that would involve a move from the Arctic North; the job is likely to be split between two sites; Docklands and the South Coast. Looking at the map somewhere like Haywards Heath, East Grinstead would seem the kind of location we would need to live in. House prices seem to be similar to here in Yorkshire, so that isn’t a huge consideration. However, I am interested to find out if anyone has any thoughts, particularly if you’ve lived in both the north and south. Do you prefer one to the other, if so why...?

And don't forget if you say "Good Morning" to someone in Lunnun they look at you as if you've two heads or are attempting to rape them.........
Dahn Saarf Nay I say, only rats take part in the ratrace!
Oop Noorth for me, more polite, more "civilised", time to pass the time of day and friendlier.....

I think if you compare the price of beer in the two regions, it will give a fair idea of how the overall cost of living differs between North and South.
In Manchester I paid £1.05 for a pint of Banks'.
In London I once paid £2.80 for a pint of Tetleys.
I agree with your sentiment about there being cost of living to consider, but on the whole the cost of living can't be that different, can it? I'm living in Leeds at the moment, typically a pint is ~£2.20, and a bottle of lager in a city centre pub is £3.00, but I could probably find some dodgy old timers place that would sell me a pint of beer for £1.30.
A meal out for two is usually ~£100.00. Council Tax on a 4 bed house is ~£200.00 per month. Is the south greatly different?
From having lived in the north and south (and middle) my favourite was living up north. The cost of living was much more acceptable and I found the people friendlier, basically all the cliches. Although the wages are higher down south, so is the cost of living, if your new job's money will bridge the gap then fair enough.
Of course if you do move down south you'll soon look at strangers with suspicion and hostility and not have time for all your old friends
Edit, I see you live in Leeds, I used to live there and absolutely loved every minute.
Shuffles towards the door crying, remembering what it was like to live in a city with non-chav nightlife

I have a group of friends who live just south of the Ashdown Forest (in between East Grinstead and HH) and it's perfect for both Docklands and Brighton/Worthing. As I was born in Brighton (but now living in Wales) I'm obviously biased but Sussex & southern Surrey is gorgeous, the Ashdown area is lovely and I actually think that people in that area are more welcoming of northerners than the reverse. Rural towns such as East Grinstead really are lovely and I honestly believe the quality of life you would have would be far better than Leeds or Manchester.
London. Red Ken. I rest my case.
You drive your car up North and people will give you admiring glances. You drive it down South and people will sneer and chant slogans at you. Things are too expensive down there and the standards of living is restrictive (OK so this refers to London but London is spreading and the 'London attitude' is engulfing the South East in general (a friend of mine from Southend says that it's a faceless extension of London - London is the only focal point down there).

The pace of life is much more conducive to good living up here, its far less crowded, there are hardly any speed cameras and its much warmer.
Y'see that was one factor that was making the move seem appealing, the south is warmer than here. I went back to the Midlands recently, my friends had a garden full of flowers and could sit outside in the early evening, got back up here and we still had a frost!
