Golf R v VW Touarag MPG - what to get next
Discussion
I have a golf R mk 7 that’s going back to the leasing company early March. I’m thinking of buying a Touarag 65plate. My question is do you think the Touarag will be a lot thirstie on fuel, motorway, around town and country B roads? Appreciate driving style will be different in the Touarag but need to be sure it won’t be a nightmare in comparison? SQ5 was an option but too high mileage on 20k budget.

The most economical touareg, V6 diesel, is quoted as getting 42mpg. The least, the V8 petrol, gets 31. VW claims the Golf R gets 41mpg. So should be similar or worse than the Golf R.
VW say a lot of things and 41mpg on an R is only possible on a flat road at 50mph in eco mode coasting. On a downhill.
With a push.
On the back of a lorry.

I've owned both. My Golf R long term MPG was about 28mpg. I'd see 32mpg on a run, in eco mode, but that never lasted long as it was so boring. My wife currently has the Touareg 3.0V6 (262PS) to ferry the kids about. She does a lot of short journeys, her long term average is about 24mpg. With the standard fuel tank it takes about £100 to fill it and she'll get about 380-420 miles to a tank.
If you're concerned about MPG, stay away from the Touareg. At the end of the day it's a 2+ tonne vehicle, with permanent 4WD, automatic box (not DSG) running around on wide tyres. It's never going to be economical.
I've had my 2015 Touareg R-line 3 litre diesel for 3 months now. On short journeys, such as my 5 mile drive to work, I get an indicated 32mpg. On my regular trips to Plymouth from Penzance (75 miles) I get an indicated 40mpg. The return journey shows 36mpg, which I put down to the way the hills run, plus getting out of Plymouth with a cold engine.
Over a full tank I'm getting between 34 and 36mpg indicated.
Checking consumption brim to brim shows the OBC to be about 6% optimistic, so a real average of around 33 mpg over 2.5k miles. Not bad for such a big and heavy car.
