Petrol or Diesel

Hello,
I average about 25,000 miles per year. I do two long drives a week of 150 miles each or so and lots of little stop start journeys during the day. This is why I am unsure of what to get, as my driving pattern suits either engines as I understand it. I will be looking at a van or car derived van for my next vehicle.
Any advice will be appreciated , thanks.

For 25,000 miles a year, I'd be inclined to go diesel. But, I like driving either. Preference would also be a factor in that for me; as some people hate driving cars of particular fuel types.

But will I not ruin the diesel engine with the stop start driving throughout the week?

No you won't with your mileage an automatic diesel will be fine or depending on your budget you could get a diesel hybrid so you combine the best of both worlds.

Also, with diesels being gradually phased out won't it be near impossible to sell on our diesels in a few years time?

As much as i hate them diesels won't be phased out, they might become hybrid and smaller diesels will be replaced by petrols or electric. Sales might slow but you have no need to worry at the moment.

Let’s say you choose a petrol car that averages 35mpg (so a fairly sporty thing) and the diesel mid 40’s mpg.

Fuel
Petrol £1.219
Diesel £1.239
I filled up on Sunday and those were the prices.

So for 25,000 Miles a year - on fuel alone
Diesel will cost you £3,141
Petrol will cost you £3,974

Or if you prefer for each mile the pence per mile is
Diesel £0.125
Petrol £0.159

So not much in it really.

Then think about the likely future step up in diesel duty per ltr of fuel and possibly higher congestion charges and also possibly higher depreciation.

Those are things to consider / I run two diesels currently, the replacements will not be diesel - we do go in cycles of petrol then diesel etc but now far less likely to be buying diesel again IMHo.

summed up well, plus no faffing about with injectors, DPFs and DMFs costing an arm and leg to fix
