Mini is nearly two years old. Had no paint work done, no recent valet, the mark has just appeared!

Hard to tell from the picture. It may be that the panel has taken a hit, sufficient to put the slightest deformation in the bodywork and is only noticeable around the edge of the deformation. We had this on my wifes car - someone had probably stumbled against the panel in a car park.

Maybe take it to a detailer and get them to check it over? My friend used a paint depth measuring tool when going over my car and it was pretty interesting.

It looks like the reflection from a window.

It could have been damaged and touched up prior to collection from the dealer.

My money is still on the imperceptible bump theory.
In our instance I'm sure that the panel flexed back after the impact as we assumed it was from a well padded backside.
So there was no edge to the area of impact and it was only visible in certain light conditions.

You'd be surprised how often this happens.
As above, have the paint depth checked.
