I recently developed a liking for whisky after receiving a bottle of Chivas Regal 12 year old for Christmas - promptly polished off, and very nice I thought too.
I've been to Lidl and purchased a bottle of Arbrachan blended malt whisky at £17 - and I bloody well like it!
May not appeal to whisky snobs but there's a bottle of it going skiing with me next week.

£18 Aldi Speyside came out either top or near to it in a blind tasting competition: http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/food-and-d...
I've had a bottle myself and it's not bad

I have had a few Lidl and Aldi whiskies...
The Aldi "Irish Reserve 26 Year Old" was excellent just before christmas - if you are lucky you may still find it - last week I saw it in the Christchurch stroe reduced to £29.99
I have tried the Aldi Glen Alba Speyside mentioned above and can confirm it is a bargain at £17.49 - very similar to Chivas with a better finish. I have yet to try the Islay version but wil probably buy a bottle next week.
Last year Lidl had Glen Alba- 22 (or25) year old sherry cask finish blended scotch - it was absolutely fantastic and a bargain at £29.99 and very similar to Aberlour A'bundah, which is considerably more expensive.

I bought the 25yo Sherry a couple of years ago and confirm then it as a cracker - so much so that I bought another - not yet opened.Last year Lidl had Glen Alba- 22 (or25) year old sherry cask finish blended scotch - it was absolutely fantastic and a bargain at £29.99 and very similar to Aberlour A'bundah, which is considerably more expensive.
The Aldi Spey and Islay are excellent at price point in presenting what are the characteristics of the region - peat and sherry respectively - and work well and also represent excellent value.
I still advocate single cask releases - as long as they keep a Yorkshire man happy ( they represent the values of quality and good value) - I am drinking a SMWS single cask bottling bought at a preview event last night - £56. But equally A'dunadh and 105 are favourites - if youwant high abv ant a good price point.
