Coming back from shops yesterday 5:15pm in short sharp shower, Royal Mail lorry pulled out right in front of me, I braked HARD, I was doing around 30mph, car locked it's brakes, skidded, turned left about 20 degrees, which took the front left wheel into the kerb !

I was expecting ABS to kick in & expecting car to brake in a straight line...............pressures both fronts was 2.1

Thoughts..............Issue ??

Definitely sounds like an ABS issue...

Hmm...

Something similar happened to me about a month ago (albeit luckily I didn’t go into a kerb).

Braked hard and car skidded to the left slightly. Certainly felt less planted and secure than when I did the brake test at the PEC.

I’d just assumed it was a cold and damp day and that the abs wasn’t totally infallible and hadn’t thought about it since.

Sounds very odd for a new car. I would try and reproduce it some where it is safe to do so (wide road with no traffic about) and if it still happens, raise it with my local Porsche dealer.

P zero's are crap :-) I think they are dangerous tyres, had to even dump them on my Golf !!!

If it has those then you just have to drive on faith alone.

I would agree to it sounding like an ABS issue. A few years ago I had an intermittent fault on an NSX when the ABS warning light would randomly come on. Because it was intermittent I just wondered whether it was a faulty electrical contact. So on one occasion when the warning light was on I tested it out on an empty section of road. Around 30mph I braked hard and the car nearly span and finished up with its nose nestling in the grass verge. No damage done thankfully but an object lesson in the effectiveness of ABS .

In your circumstances if you are registered for Porsche Assist I would ask them to collect it on a transporter and take it straight to OPC.

Gratuitous photo of Porsche and non Porsche content wink

To be honest, i’m In agreement with you as my car is running them.

Obviously it was an emergency stop situation when I experienced a similar issue to the OP so with adrenaline flowing maybe I didn’t have total clarity, but it certainly felt more like a tyre issue than abs.

I know other people like the ones above think I am crazy, but they are putting peoples life at risk on this new Spyder I have picked up, and on my Golf there was no grip and the car was unmanageable and would wheel spin in 3rd and caused all lots of abs issues even if you looked at the brakes.

car like the 718 and 981 SPyder are very under tyre with the p Zero, and the chatter you get with any steering angle is horid as they slip accross the road ! look at the brakes and you have zero stopping distance in the cold as they offer up zero grip when cold the ABS cannot cope with it.

I have PS4S on all my cars now and no ABS issues on the golf and loads of grip in the cold and wet it rally is like driving in the summer on these tyres.
no wheel hop either.

nasty things Pzero and people can either choose to take the piss and stay on them or dump them like I have.

1000's of porkers are running on very hard cracked P zero's and the new ones are no better ! A shocking tyre how they pass any form of N spec rating is shocking.

I found p zeros to be very poor. Switched to Michelin Pilot Cup Sport 2, a summer tyre I know but still a great around tyre.

Thx for all the comments, will contact OPC next week re ABS, will also mention all the chat about the P zero's, be interesting to hear their comments.
Has anyone contacted Pirelli to see what they have to say ?

Might be worth taking a look at the road surface again..

Perhaps a lack of adhesion on the nearside for whatever reason plus road camber might have contributed..

Just a thought - failing ABS whilst possible is relatively unlikely nowadays

As suggested above - I'd go find an open wide piece of flat tarmac and try the ABS out & several times too.

I regularly do this on my bikes and cars - always good to remind yourself what it feels like even in my '65 TR4a which is slightly more entertaining!!

It's a known fact that Pzeros are utterly crap tyres, yet Porsche and all the major car manufacturers continue to fit them to their high performance cars - and even fit them to the cars they offer for roadtest. Pirelli must be bribing all the independent roadtesters - who rate the tyres highly despite the far greater financial muscle that Michelin have. biglaugh

Confused............ been out brake tested on same piece of road, damp conditions- once @ 35mph & again @ 55mph..................perfect both times car stopped in a straight line & wheels did not lock up !!!........I'm pretty sure I hit the brakes really hard as in emergency stop.........
Anyways have noticed that below 8 degrees tyres slip when cornering @ low speeds & car wanders @ 70mph +, but when come down to 55mph - fine.
As soon as temperature comes up to 11/12 degrees the car is fine.......................So winter tyres for me if I decide to drive it when it's cold in future.
Although I tend to only take the car out for lazy pub lunches, normally when the weathers good !
