Anyone made the switch?
Thinking of treating myself to a new gaming PC but my main worry is learning how to use a keyboard and mouse.
I could use a contoller still but as i mainly play online PvP games my worry is that i'd be at a huge disadvantage.
How long has it taken others to get up to speed with a keyboard and mouse?

I did it last year when I built myself an awesome PC. However, FPS games on PC need keyboard and mouse skills. I don't have them so got ravaged every time. I did play racing games and platforms games (Tomb Raider) with the xbox one controller but since I've bought an Xbox One X my PC hasn't been played on.

Providing you use a mouse everyday for general PC work it won't take you very long to get used to the mouse for FPS and the like, the muscle memory and coordination will already be there. The other issue will be the keyboard, the only way round that is to experiment mapping the keys to whatever is most comfortable for you and then try and be consistent across games. It's just a case of practising, but again you've been using keyboards for years, it will only take a few hours of practice before it's second nature. Just make sure that your choice of keys is right for you and don't go along with whatever the game defaults are..

Also get a decent keyboard and mouse, rather than the generic £5 tat that a lot of people use.

I'm having the other problem, after 25 years of keyboard/mouse I'm starting to play PS4 FPS on my son's new console and I'm really struggling to get used to the thumb sticks. I'm struggling to hit anything!

p.s. If you use a controller on a PC PvP server you'll get hammered. smile

Your first worry should be the cost of graphics cards - they've gone through the roof recently and really made the PC not worth bothering with (IMO)

GPUs had already got expensive, but mining has made prices silly. I'm glad I got my 1080 when they first came out, but even then I resented how much more I had to pay for it than previous high end cards. I'll be keeping it for quite a while, unless there's some sudden change that means it can no longer perform in new games. I don't really expect that to happen though. My kids have my old, 980, 680 and 480 in their PCs and they can play up to date game.

You’ll soon get the hang of a K&M.

If you intend to game at 1080P, then it doesn’t even need to be expensive. If you intend playing at 4K you’re going to have to bend over at the moment.

As already mentioned, graphic card prices are ballastic at the moment. You’re looking at £800-900 for an Nvidia 1080Ti if you can even find stock at the moment.

Utterly ridiculous and I’m waiting it out for the next range of cards instead. Will try to get a pre-order in before the miners snap them all up, any time from the end of March to June at a guess.

Christ, I heard they were expensive but that's mental!
There's some benchmarking software from a company called FutureMark, they collate all the results from people running the software so you can see how good the cards are compared to their price -

Learning how to use a KB and mouse is easy, you'll pick it up almost instantly as it's far more intuitive than a controller.

After about 5 minutes of using a KB and mouse, you wont want to go back to the controller even though a few games (mostly AAA snorefests) have XBox controller support.

That's a pretty blinkered view.

Some GPU's have went up in price but CPU's have went down. A Threadripper 1950x recently had a £150 cut in price...offsetting any GPU increase.

If you shop smart you'll find not all GPU's have increased...the Titan Xp Star Wars Edition launched at £1,149...it's now £999. Bargain!!

What you need to do there is give up !

That's what I did. 10 years ago I bought a PS3 - biggest waste of money ever. I tried and tried with those thumbs sticks and so for 10 years said PS 3 has been gathering dust on my TV stand, only being used to play DVDs/Blu Rays. Oddly, only this week i ditched it for just a normal DVD/BR player. Anyone want to buy a PS3 ?!

I only play on PC with KBM. My kids can move seamlessly from PC to PS4 to WiiU. They play some games on PC with KBM and some with Xbox controllers, mostly third person games.

Did it and never looked back.

Even down to the K95 mechanical keyboard.

Uber spec PC tbh, and as a result the gaming experience is great.

Will never have a console again - simply can't compare imho.

I went from Xbox to a PC last year. Didnt take too long, I would say a few hours on CS:GO and I was there with a keyboard and mouse set up and now I could never go back to playing on a controller for certain games. Tried out a friends One X at Christmas and the controller felt so alien to me despite being a console gamer all my life until I switched to PC last year.

Fair point. I am (or, was) looking at it from an upgrade point of view. Not so much now as the cost of replacing my 770 is just insane (1070's were 330 a couple months ago - they're up to 550 now!)

I was considering the switch later this year but the cost/availability of graphics cards is a real ballache. I don't think it'll stop me but it's frustrating knowing I'd be paying a fair chunk more than a year ago.

I played BF2 on a really ste PC years ago and the mouse/keyboard is pretty intuitive - once you've set it up how you like. Get a decent keyboard and a well designed mouse with some well placed extra buttons and it's good fun.

I've never played games on a kickass PC so can't wait to give it a go.

Just done the switch (back) last week. Wanted a decent PC for playing some racing sims, VR and the odd FPS (I always preferred keyboard and mouse). Not had a PC for about 15 years. Yeah, I'm rusty, but I'll get used to it again soon enough.

Eh? I just bought a Zotac Nvidia GTX 1080Ti Amp! for my build from Ebuyer for £548+VAT last week?

RAM prices are skyhigh too. 16GB of decent DDR will set you back £200.

1080Ti is really high-end though. I've got a GTX980, which is equivalent to a 1060 and I get away with most stuff on "High" @ 1440P without too much problem, and they're about £250 which might be a more reasonable entry point.

Last time I bought a graphics card was around two years ago. What's happened to the prices?

THey have gone sky high. In fact I have been toying with a 1070 and have a few in my amazon wish list. Checking prices have gone up on one of them 35% in a month.
