Anyone know if this is possible?

The reason I ask is because I'm moving to a new flat in a couple of weeks which is in a broadband enabled area and has BT phone lines etc. However, being a bloke, I don't use the phone very much and don't want a land line unless I absolutely have to. Can I get broadband over the line already there, or will I have to bite the bullet and connect up to BT?

Is the flat wired for cable TV?

You need a BT phone line.

Even Satellite BB uses a phone line to upload...

Try www.netvigator.co.uk - they do wireless BB... just not quite in my area.

Fraid not, although it is wired for Sky which is handy as I can just plug my current box in. Doesn't help with the broadband though

Is the building / street wired for cable TV? If so, get Telewest in.

If you're in an NThelL area you can get broadband without a phone line. I wouldn't recommend it though unless there's no other option.

Not sure as it's a new build flat the address doesn't show on their website checker. The closest addesses all seem to be able to get it though However, Telewest's prices are identical to BTs (£10.50 for phone and £19.99 for BB) so wouldn't really be saving anything and would be forced to use BlueYonder.

NTHell's not available in my area (which I guess could be a blessing in disguise)

Don't have to get the phone as part of the package AFAIK (so there's your saving) and there's nowt wrong with BY in my experience.

Any other solution would need to be wireless and (as has been pointed out) even the satellite option (v.v.expensive!) requires a 'phone line for upstream.

Does your neighbour have BB?

If he does, perhaps pay for an install a wireless router and go halves on the BB cost...

Actually, I think you might have your prices wrong - TW's 256k service is £17.99pcm and it doesn't require you to have a phone service.

Don't know yet as I move in in a couple of weeks. With any luck they'll be numpties who don't encrypt their wireless network and broadcase the SSID

Telewest looks like a good option apart from the:

If you do not own your house, you have a shared drive, or live in a flat or maisonette then we may need a Wayleave Agreement from your landlord or neighbours providing consent to cross their property. This can be arranged for you to help ensure a smooth installation of Telewest services.
As the flat's a leasehold I guess I'll have to ask the management company who own the lease on the building.

I want at least 512k really so would go for the 1Mb one. And you're right, you don't need the phone service for this

I was paying £12 per something for my old flat, i have a sneaking suspicion that it was per quarter. Dial 150 and see what they say.
