A friend found a number of these in a shed in France, all with identical marking/numbering.
It's about an inch / 2.5cm across, made of brass.
I don't think it's a Rolls Royce logo as the second R is on top (the first R is on top on a Rolls Royce logo), but it may be an early version I suppose....
There are no bad suggestions!

A tag for an animal to denote ownership perhaps.

S.E.D. is a French acronym for Soulever et Déplacer (a removals company). Could be that maybe?

Could be tool tags. In aircraft maintenance, if you want to sign a tool out of the stores they put one of those on a hook on the tool board or cabinet to denote who's taken it. Each mechanic would be issued with a set with a common serial number on them so that they could take multiple tools out for a job. It enables the organisation to sign em all back at the end of the maintenance and show who had it last.

Rolls Royce don't/didn't just manufacture luxury cars.

It could be aviation or military related.

Exactly my first thoughts.

If the tags are all numbered 17, they were issued to one fitter who used them to book tools out of the tool store.
If a shadow board system was in place, it would enable all tools to be accounted for at the end of shift, any tools not booked back in would be indicated by its silhouette, and the tool tag would indicate who hadn't returned the item.
Helps prevent loose article FOD. ( foreign object debris/ damage )

I can't see why it wouldn't have been a system in place at Rolls Royce Aero Engines Division.
They would have had engineers / fitters based in Toulouse. Or possibly the tags belonged to an ex-Rolls employee who retired to France.

shout Come in No.17, you've still got a 2BA wobbly booked out!

Think this is the final piece of the jigsaw:

Small engines would have been turboshafts (helicopters) and turboprops (fixed wing)

Suspect the RR is the wrong orientation as these would have been very cheap light engineering things that wouldn't be seen by the public so probably not rejected.

Clearly I took too long in replying. smile

My sources pretty much confirm the above. Tool tags for Small Engine Division is the likely explanation for SED.

Leavesden is now a film studio where apparently Harry Potter was filmed.

OP can you divulge where in France they were found? It has been suggested that the aforementioned shed may have been owned by an RR ex-pat.
