RS2 in Kings Langley \ Pre Sales Inspection
Discussion
Hi,
A dealer in King Langley is selling an RS2 which I'm interested in. I'm wondering if any members have seen the car and or know the dealer? I will be planning a pre sales inspection of the car. Could any members recommend a good King Langley's area shop to conduct one? Alternatively, I would be willing to pay a member to check the car out as I trust the forum community.

Google some pics of the std wheels on other RS2’s ( the photos of my old one are sadly on my desktop, or I’d post pics), the wheel look like aftermarket ones.
Given tha ad states unmodified when that’s clearly not true, jap import, Ltd, & the wheels etc, I’d be looking elsewhere or hanging on for another.
It looks a lot of money for what it is.

The wheels look standard to me, Ive had two RS2`s and still have one, they do require a refurb though if you look at the close ups. £39.9k is a lot of money for a LHD in the UK, unless you`re specifically looking for a left hooker. You really do need to know what you`re looking at when purchasing one of these. Parts are getting difficult to get hold of too so know that once you buy, they`re not cheap to maintain.
I may be wrong but that exterior looks surprisingly "fresh" (inc the badges & gleaming red calipers). Door cards may have been off as well but that could be for anything minor.
You don't see many of those 4spk Grandad type steering wheels either, I had one on my S2 but changed mine to the chunkier 3spk version.
It's crazy what these are going for nowadays but in fairness, they are an icon.

Theres nothing wrong with the car having had a "detail", if that's what its had, things I can see from the pictures:
Wheels need a refurb.
Door cards have been off and have been ruined on their replacement.
Check the plastic fittings on the bottom of each door (outside), they ripple and blister their selves off of the door and start hanging off.
Check the headlining, they all drop on all RS2`s (should be black).
The fog-lights have yellowed with age, they are £250 each for originals.
Speedo is still in Kms (If youre using it in UK might want it to be MPH
Check the headlights have been exchanged for RHD, not just flicked over on the switch behind the headlights.
The steering wheel is completely wrong, the original standard should be three spoke with an RS2 badge on the bottom spoke. (see pic below)
Check no water or oil leaks, make sure it comes with a very comprehensive service history and that you can understand it.
If you are able to get underneath it do so, ask them to put it on ramps and look around at the general condition and look at the sub-frame and wishbone bushes to see if they are perished, if they are perished then they will need changing at sometime and sub-frame bush changes are not cheap. Check the exhaust for any gas leaks (it looks original) if it is it will be on its last legs and new ones are no longer available.
The handbrake on the RS2 is crap it is the same type of system as the old original mini, they will work once the handbrake shoes have been adjusted but within a week or about 100 miles of use theyre useless again, its a known problem with these cars and is accepted by all owners.
Check the diff lock switch works, turn it on from standstill and ensure it stays locked in, drive off and increase speed until 20Kms it should automatically switch off, and no noises, rumbles or grumbles be heard when its engaged, if it does, walk away and do not let them tell you its fixable, it`ll need a new diff. If it doesn't work then it could be a minor issue with a vacuum pipe but could also be the diff not engaging properly.
All of the above I would expect to be correct or corrected before sale at the high price they are asking.
If I can think of anything else I will let you know.

Thank for your input and advise. I've seen a few RS2 (in photos) with that steering wheel. I assumed it depended on what country the car was ordered from, that allowed for the variance.. I'll make sure to factor that into the price. I'll also ask about the other areas you mentioned. Wheels need a refurb.

I owned a 90Q here in the US (V6 slug). The foam in the door cards began to deteriorate, so I figured the same happen here. Not the best patch work though... Currently I own a URS4, my handbrake needs to be rebuilt as well..
I also had a vacuum issue with my difflock when I first purchased the car
The dealer is working on getting me undercarriage shots. I'll share them once I've got them. I asked for a few other areas that were left out in the advertisement. What's got me worried is the Japanese maintenance history.. I'll need to have the records translated, as you mentioned, I need to understand it

Thank you again for your guide!

I am close, more than happy to go and have a look at it if you sort it out with them.
Thank you for the offer! Once I get more info from the dealer, I'll see about working something out. I'd like to pay you for your time, perhaps we can discuss via PM. I'll get back to you. Thank you If you want to get the Alloy wheels refurbed I'd ask the dealer to send the car to these people who are close by...they're very good.

They refurbed the Monza II's on my Mk V Golf GTi which are not an easy wheel to do and did a great job. No connection other than that.

Currently I own a URS4...
A much nicer car than the RS2 in my (biased) opinion, especially if you've replaced the crummy US-spec brakes. I'd very happily run another urS4/6. Wonderful things. I'd assumed the time that having the 100S4 would be a stepping stone to the RS2, but in the reckoning the RS actually offered relatively little useful performance benefit and a whole bunch of drawbacks (rear leg room being important at that time). bigee said:

Not sure yet, I asked the dealer for that info.. I also asked for some key photos which I'm waiting to see. Things like photos of the undercarriage, photos of the wheel-wells with the wheels off and photos of the VIN number in key areas. Yertis said:

Here is the other info I asked about, the link has about 30 photos and video of the undercarriage. Edited by dvbelliss on Tuesday 30th January 04:28

This is what I was told:"Another option is that as the car is currently with one of the UK leading Audi specialists (FONTAINE AUDI https://www.fontain.co.uk ) you can always speak directly to the Manager there as they have done an inspection / PDI on the car and are carrying out the service etc, belts all using genuine parts from Audi Tradition.de"
