Hi,
I am in the process of buying a car (R35 GT-R). I've paid deposit on credit card but does a part payment provide full protection for the whole purchase?

Also credit card offers protection for items costing £100-30,000, but the car is worth more than that.

The other issue is the handling fee to pay on credit card.

Thanks!

Have you asked the seller, they may refuse to take a card payment for the balance

As long as the deposit is more than £100 on credit card, you are covered.

I doubt they will take a full balance on credit card but debit card should be OK

And the credit card must be your account, not a named user on someone elses account.

As said Section 75 is up to £30k but you still get other support if paying even the deposit by card

There shouldnt be a fee if you use one though I understood that has ended

Would agree that putting the full purchase on one might be tricky as the retailer will be absorbing the transaction fee

Thanks guys.

The receipt of the car states a 3% handling fee for credit card payments. My understanding is that this would be passed onto the buyer i.e. me.

My credit card cannot be raised to cover the entire price of the car, so debit card or bank transfer will also be required too. If a nominal amount gives the protection, there's no point paying a large amount and then the handling fee.

Recent regulations prohibit fees for payment by credit card. However, this may mean that businesses that used to accept credit cards may not any longer.

So it's not covered.
