At my wits end with it all (and PayPal) ... can’t see myself using it in the future now

Sold 4 G-Shock watches on eBay in December, all sold and buyers paid relatively promptly.

One was sent to Italy via the eBay distribution centre, buyer received it and left feedback etc...

Fast forward to midJan I get a message from eBay stating they buyer requested a chargeback as suspects the item is counterfeit ... sent the buyer a message with a copy of the receipt from G-Shock (ordered direct from them) don’t hear any more till this morning when I am informed eBay and PayPal have intervened and refunded the buyer the £85 they paid and they get to keep the watch!

I’m livid.

Spoke with eBay who refuse to discuss and advise it’s been decided upon and there is no recourse now! Even though it’s not counterfeit and I have proof of this!

Surprised that they dont have to return the item, did they give a reason why?

E Bay appears to be full of this type of thing these days I'm afraid.
I avoid selling anything on there these days.

The only recourse you have is to reach out to the buyer and try to get them to mail the watch back to you.

If a buyer pays using a credit card with PayPal and then opens a credit card chargeback, PayPal's hands are usually tied, meaning they will inevitably refund the buyer.

Unfortunately there will always be "opportunists" out there who will try & get items for free.
Ebay's rules about not returning items absolutely stink as the seller loses out on a lot of money. mad

Im surprised anyone still uses Ebay considering the amount of complaints I read just on here. It appears to be full of people trying to rip other people off. I refuse to use it and have not been scammed by anyone. Just stop using it and you won't get scammed.

Surely this makes a complete mockery of ebay/paypal if they allow this kind of thing to happen.

So what this basically means is that i can order the near 100k Rolex Daytona that's on ebay at the moment, receive it, wait a while, then say it's counterfeit, get my 100k back AND get to keep the watch? confused

Hopefully you can get the watch back from the buyer but i suspect they knew exactly what they were doing.

I didn't think you could do a chargeback on transactions through 3rd party payment systems?

I think it's great for buying stuff - bought a couple of hundred things and had one problem - with a localish guy who was going to drop the item off but never did.

I couldn't be arsed selling stuff though. In some ways I feel bad about that, as obviously it would die without sellers. I do think an awful lot of stuff is nicked or counterfeit though.

Many know how to work the system with ebay , ebay know that these people know how to work the system .
PayPal also know of all the scams .
Despite all the claims that both make about how secure it is the scams are on the increase .
I no longer sell on Ebay and do not have any bank accounts linked with PayPal.

I sell the odd bits and bobs and 9 times out of 10 its cash collection only.

On the rare occasion I use post I video the item working and zoom in on S/Ns etc and then package it up on camera and hope if anything happens that's enough for ebay. I got that idea off here.

Of late I have been getting a lot of requests for international shipping. I always refuse.

That said I have used the international shipping option myself on purchases and its worked ok, although very slow (2-3 weeks) and they make you pay the VAT upfront.

TBH in what must be getting on for 20 years of using ebay with over 1000 transactions I have had <5 problems. That said all of them have been in the last couple of years.

Videoing it is a damn good idea. I recently sold a flight sim trim wheel on ebay; shockingly it went for £100 more than I thought it would. So I plugged it in and videoed it working (in the windows calibration window, and in the flight sim; so any complaints that come through I have a video filmed in glorious 4k for them to watch.

Ebay's rules don't trump the law. If you think that you've been scammed, you are quite at liberty to take the scammer to court regardless of what Ebay or Paypal say. Unlikely to be worthwhile for a £85 watch sent to Italy, but I suspect they might pursue you a little harder for a 100k Rolex.

I think paypal will automatically pay out up to £500 under their buyer protection.

I expect if we had a thread entitled "Have you sold on eBay and had no issues?", it'd be larger than a thread like this one.

That being said, eBay's rules are heavily buyer-focused. But that doesn't mean they won't side with the seller if there is foul play afoot. I am surprised the OP has seen this outcome despite being able to prove that the watch was genuine. I dare say if he escalates it properly, he'll get the desired outcome.

Paypal is fine, I have been using it for years. They once helped me when a company took two payments from me, I only noticed when my statement came though, when I queried it the company said there was noting they could do as it was over 30 day. Paypal got my money back.

ebay is horrible they charge you for basically breathing on the site now. I try everything I can not to sell on it but things I don't care about I just want something rather than binning them I will use.

Example.

End of October I sold a ipod shuffle spares or repairs as unable to test it - I had no wires etc. Honest as I could be 99p starting cost. It sold for £22 plus postage to my shock.

Fast forward to December 27th I get a request to return the item. In the reason he states "I charged it and it was fine but now will not charge so isn't fit for purpose and I would like to return it for a refund"

I declined straight away with the response "No returns accepted as per the ebay advert. I also have to point you to the fact its sold spares / repairs as it was un tested. You advise it was charging and you have used the item, then nearly 2 months later you decide its not working and want a refund. In that time anything could of happened so sorry I decline"

I then got a barrage of messages saying I knew it was damaged, I am a con man etc and left neutral feedback.............

I also sold some lego men at the same time to a chap who bought a fair few. After he won he demanded discount as he bought so many. In the end I caved and gave him a little bit of money back and he paid me. I send EVERYTHING tracked and I checked he still HASNT collected the item from the post office since October lol All that fuss for nothing.

winds me up also NOT ONE person has given feedback for items sold in the last 12 months. Why the hell not?

In the OP case I'd send another parcel full of dog crap or sign the buyer up to everything possible as you have his address and email from the paypal transaction wink

Theoretically the buyer is supposed to have sent the watch back, it’s never arrived at ebays Italian international postage centre, they won’t provide any proof of postage and refuse to send any images of the reasons as to why they believe the Watch is counterfeit

In fairness I have sold a good few mobile phones on eBay over the years to all over the world and not had any issues really but this has really wound me up!

When Ebay was 'small' and mostly amateur sellers feedback was a big thing. It was also the early days of the internet so I suppose there was an element of nice to be nice. Now it's dominated by big retailers and professional Ebay sellers with hundreds of thousands of feedback. I buy the occasional low cost item and never leave feedback. Not deliberately but usually a) they don't need it and b) I'd have to log back in and that's a hassle too far. It's not compulsory.

I used to sell a fair bit too but I couldn't be bothered now. Too much hassle.
