A thread about morons who make you want to live on another planet. Jobs that could be performed by a monkey, but have "professionals" failing miserably. Tasks that should take a few seconds, but take weeks. All because some fk tards are happy ambling along in a cloud of there own stupidity.

Volkswagon gassing monkeys. - How did this even get floated as an idea? It's a joke even without Volkswagons diesel history in the USA or the Nazi gassing connections.

Cracking down on speeding in the name of safety. - You can make or lose 5mph on your speedo depending on how your steat is adjusted. Watch your speed... not the road!

Winston Churchill themes cafe stormed by protestors - for what, exactly? They sang: '"It is our duty to fight for our freedom" and "We have nothing to lose but our chains". Do these idiots not have a single clue about the war? What Hitler would have done with a successfull invasion?

Irony alert.

if you know a little about WWII, you say "speseeba"
If you know a lot about WWII, you say "Danke"
If you know nothing about WWII, you'll say what Prizam did (or "if you read this in English, thank a soldier")

In the grand scheme of things, Hitler never planned to invade Britain. He just wanted to force us out of the war so he could concentrate on Eastern Europe where Hitler really sought his Lebensraum (C'mon, even in the 40's there was not a lot of spare room in the UK). The idea was to force a negotiated peace with the UK, he didn't count on British not giving in.

To be fair, unbeknown to the British at the time Germany had no way to deliver any large number of troops across the channel. They had almost no large troop transports and no landing ships. The majority of the Kriegsmarine were combat vessels. They didn't even have the knowledge to build them having concentrated all their efforts on high tech submarines and cruisers. An invasion was a non-starter.

However what I meant about the "thank you" thing in different languages (speseeba = Russian, danke = German). Common consensus is that the Russians were our most powerful allies in the war, whilst they did do most of the heavy lifting the officer purges in the 1930's by Stalin left their military, well, to be blunt... dumb as a brick.

Soviet strategy was, from 1942 to the end of the war to surround the enemy in overwhelming numbers of men and artillery. They never needed to try anything more clever because Hitler gave the order that no German unit could retreat. Had the Germans retreated back to the Russian border instead of trying to hold a 1000 mile front in enemy territory, Europe today would look very different indeed.

Hitler had a lot of bright sparks in his army, however he tied their hands and prevented them from outsmarting the Russians. So in a quite ironic way, Hitler was the best ally we had because he wouldn't stop doing stupid things with his army. If Hitler had of allowed his Generals to withdraw to a defensive line there would have been enough forces for the battles in western Europe would have been much bloodier, fortunately for us, Hitler kept making mistakes.

It has always interested me that the various people who tried to assassinate Hitler are often held as heroes.

Personally from my limited knowledge I think that he was our secret weapon from about the end of '43 and am rather glad that he was not bumped off so that someone who knew how to fight a war could call the shots.

Huh, I did do a skim proofread. Didn't spot those though.

I guess if I had a job publishing written articles, a bit like the ones on the pistonheads front page, and made mistakes like that then I really would be an idiot.

that's a great summary of it.

Before the war there are a number of speeches and 'views' of Hitler that he "admired" the British and our Empire, he didn't want to fight us as such but equally didn't want us sticking our noses in for Europe and fighting him. There was political opposition to standing up to him and joining in, - thankfully we did.

Better the Devil you know. I have not read about any real assassination attempts by the Allies on Hitler partly because the Allies regarded him as being a hindrance to his own army - certainly in the middle/latter parts as his tactical/strategic views were pretty dire.
With the Invasion of Britain - the Navy wouldn't do it without guaranteed air/naval superiority, the army wouldn't do it without Both navy and air dominance, the airforce couldn't get air superiority, the Navy couldn't secure a suitable window to allow an attack that would satisfy the army. etc. and so on. They blamed each other and didn't want to be the Patsy that failed. They thought they didn't have the right ships/landing craft to mount the invasion ( which with hindsight may be debatable) but they had a real mental block over the Channel despite having carried out other sea to land attacks. all 3 services struggled to work with each other.

The Russians - yep - surround and endless waves of men. Scorched earth tactics and let Mother Russia swallow them up. + fantastic effective (although not pretty) tanks in endless numbers.

Protest at a Churchill café? Pathetic.

I'm pleased I'm not eating frankfurters or driving a German car.......opps.

Anyone? confused

Even if you assume 'steat' is speed (maybe) it makes no sense.

Or should it be 'seat'? You can make or lose 5mph on your speedo depending on how your seat is adjusted. Err, no you can't.

And putting that aside, in certain areas, urban conurbations in particular, 5mph either way from a 30 limit can make a huge amount of difference between stopping should an errant child run out between parked cars, and hitting the child. So 'watch your speed' would seem to be a very sensible message.

Maybe I'm one of the stupid ones... getmecoat

I think to be fair, by the time people were really trying to kill him, most of Germany was ready to surrender to the allies than face defeat by the Soviets.

There was a story I once heard, during the final days of WWII, Rudolph Hess flew to Scotland to surrender and negotiate peace. After his capture near Glasgow, he penned a letter to Winston Churchill. By this time allied victory was assured, Churchill read the letter, then set it alight and dropped it in his rubbish bin. No-one else knew what was on that note but the story goes that Churchill was livid at it.

I think what he is saying is that its hard to keep at say 30 exactly. Certainly my speed will go around 30 in a 30. I tend to gently accelerate to 30 but it may be a bit over say 32, let off the accelerator and you come down to 30 then 28, gently accelerate back up to 30 perhaps a bit over. I suppose what I'm saying is that its very hard to drive dead on 30 and keep it there.
The fact its a limit and not a target does bash me on the head so in reality we should all be aiming for 27mph so if we edge over we are still in the 30?

Meanwhile, back on topic, I picked up three people from the railway station in my cab the other day who were from London, not that that is particularly relevant, travelling to a local small factory that makes jams and chutneys. They had booked their taxi well in advance and were quoted £10.00 for the trip. Not one of them had any cash. Despite knowing they were travelling to rural Devon. They then asked to be taken via a cash point, which incurred a diversion and further delay - not expecting to pay any more.

But that's not really the issue, the three of them were discussing the delivery of apples to a supplier and then the finished product being delivered out. To hear them speak it was like each was trying their hardest to look more important than the other. It was what would have been very simple to arrange, but making it so overly complicated I had to bite my lip hard. I felt like asking if any of them had actually heard themselves, because there was no way I'd let them manage running a bath let alone a supply chain.

there is a good book about his interviews in captivity - (forget what its called) but what a deluded and self important guy he was, was my recollection from it that's for sure. Some fascinating book on various events of the war. The story of Fort Eben-Emael in Belgium is fascinating as its the events and time line is recorded from contemporaneous records from the German side and Belgium side and first use of glider troops and first fort attacked in the first attack of the war. recommend a good read. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_Eben-Emael

I’d assume the seat position is reference to parallax effect.

Wy would you want to keep it at 30mph exactly? Drive appropriately to the conditions UP to 30mph.

Close. the missing word is "SEAT".

Depending on the angle you look at the speedo you can gain or lose a few mph either side. Assuming a 90-degree position of an analogue gauge to the user.

My other point is drivers will spend a lot more time looking at there speed rather than the road. Doing 35mph, seeing a child, breaking and hitting them at 5-10mph is a lot better than just moving them down at bang on 30mph and wondering what that bump was.

My other other point is... Why concentrate on speed so much. Police are now trying to prosecute on speed differentials that really make sweet fk all difference to anything. Increasing the minimum tread tyre depth, for instance. Would have a far greater impact. Policing it would be even better.

yes - of course. Often its safer to go faster then the limit but clearly I don't but wish to break the law and thus I try to maximise my speed by keeping to the limit if safe to do so. smile

Who is to say?

If we had of signed a non-aggression pact with the Nazis, maybe the British would have taken a swipe at French holdings in Asia. The Nazi's were many terrible things, but not known for turning on their allies. Hitlers original target was always Eastern Europe, Operation Barbarossa was originally envisioned before the outbreak of WWII, planned for 1942 when the battleship Bismarck was slated for completion. Hitler even stated he wanted to invade the Soviet Union in Mein Kampf in 1925 (the Bolsheviks were the first enemies of the Nazis, long before they started on the Jews they wiped out the German communists).

But the British took a stand and in the end, all worked out for the best.

I think its stupid too, but if we start limiting what people can say because it's unpopular, when does it stop?

Its not illegal to be stupid or an ahole... conversely you are well within your rights to call them stupid aholes for doing it.
