Think I need to treat myself to a new battery charger.
Any recommendations? Don't mind admitting I'm a bit confused by the number available - car is a 1999 4.0.

Many thanks.

What you probably want is a battery conditioner rather than a charger as such. It will charge but more importantly it wont over charge and you can leave it on all the time without damaging the battery.

I would go for an Optimate/Accumate one from personal experience, just search "Optimate 2 battery Charger" on ebay and you will get one for ~£40. Im sure Oxford etc are perfectly good as well.

If you feel you can stretch to £65, then I am gobsmacked by the brilliance of the one I just bought.
It charges, well, you would expect it to.
It tests batteries, giving you an immediate on screen readout of the condition.
It trickle charges and maintains an already charged battery automatically.
The charging programmes take account of the state of the battery and help to recover it if it is badly discharged

Thanks both for the quick responses.
Perhaps should have added, but the car isn't garaged and is kept away from a power source - therefore its an extension lead when needed.
Last year didn't get a huge amount of mileage, so think that the battery is suffering a bit at present.

You probably need to wire in a gadget called Battery Brain. Google it.

Costs about £150 plus fitting. It automatically detects when the battery power drops below the necessary level to start the car and cuts the battery off from the car. It has auxiliary leads to keep clock and radio memory alive. You have a remote on your key ring to wake it up. My TVR guy wants to fit me one because I am having issues and my battery is in the boot.....

It has added security in that if it has cut off the battery no thief can start it.

The chap I purchased mine from used a solar charger on the roof of his powerless garage. I dont have direct experience of these but he said it always kept enough charge. It maybe possible to have something laid on the dash.

I bought an AA solar charger one some years ago for the Cerb but it just didn't give enough especially in the winter months when you need it most......
My cars live outside so its an extension lead and a Ctek MX5 which does the same as the ones already recommended.

John, good idea but for one small thing. This area has one of the highest vehicle crime rates in the UK........ I think you can guess what I mean wink If they open vans like you can see in the link, I dont think a solar panel will be safe, unfortunately. Time to move to Norfolk maybe confused

I was just about to splash the cash on the Ctek MXS5 when I saw this - looks good.
Probably my ignorance on these matters, but for half the price I cant really see much difference.

I've probably missed something - haven't I...?
