A few posts on here about new Careers, options etc, does anyone else of a certain age think "Thank God I'm not starting now"?

When I left school I went to uni, my fees were paid, and I got a full grant.
I then fell in to a job in IT without really having a clue and with no work experience, and I've worked more or less continually since then until I decided to leave it all behind at the end of last year at age 56.

Didn't we have it fking easy!

I feel really sad that all today's kids have been screwed by politicians who either had it all on a plate from a rich family or got the grants we got but don't think there's an obligation to do the same for the next generations.

I saw this advertised the other day, it's an absolute disgrace.

Not really, I started work 13 years ago with no degree or anything worth putting on paper after my GCSE's. I worked hard and found an opening within the IT Department at the company I worked for. Self studied and got to where I am today without a leg up.

So I could probably do it again if I tried. I'd take a slightly different path though.

I do feel for them with the University fees and the way apprenticeships are being used as a way to employ young people on the cheap. on the flip side though they're now being educated in IT to a level that's actually useful where as what we got taught at school and in A-levels was just about enough to do basic office stuff, it does feel like schools have modernised their education to be more suited to skills employers now need, though I guess this is constantly changing but it does feel like people of my generation (left school in 99) have mainly gone into IT yet the availability of skills training through school or externally was pretty rubbish at the time

A company local to me recently advertised for apprentice office administrator. Again, a complete pisstake.
