It's been a while since I've dealved inside a computer dispite programming them all day It's currenly got 256Mb PC2700 DDR RAM. Can I plug 512Mb PC3200 DD RAM in the other memory slot or does it have to be PC2700? The motherboard is a Micro Star MS-6577

should be fine but will only go as fast as the slowest ram you have ie 2700

so for anything which requires faster ram (games) just the 512 on its own would be faster

There have been known to be backwards compatibility issues with ddr ram. be safer to get 2700, or if your mb can take it (and you can afford it), put 1 1gb or 2 512s in

no matter what ram you stick in you could get compatibility problems. your best bet is to stick to same make, model and speed. different size memory doesnt really affect performance, theres just no real point in ruuning dual memory. also avoid unbranded/generic memory, it may be cheap but will give alsorts of problems and is just not worth it
