Just watched it - the first half is a bit 'Carry On' but after that there are many excellent air-to-air Hunter sequences with some formation flying at least as good as the Arrows, I might argue better.

May have been the Black Arrows - predecessors of the Reds. Definitely not recently graduated Cranwell cadets as in the film.

Looking at the titles I see the main theme was composed by Eric Coates - he of "The Dambusters' March" fame.

And one of the co-producers was a certain Albert Broccoli. I wonder what he went on to do?

Indeed, there were some massive time jumps but you couldn't really get from cadet to combat in one film any other way I guess! The only part that really paralleled Top Gun was the sudden appearance of unidentified aircraft.
