Hello all,
Wondering if there's anyone here into anime. My Mrs and I usually have a series on the go. At the moment we're watching Fate/stay night. First one with subtitles!
I've been really impressed with Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood. Elfen Lied was good in that weird "Jesus, animé is messed up!) way smile
What have you been watching? What do you recommend?

If you have Netflix then:

I found Death note to be really really good.

Ajin: demi human.

Sword art online.

Seven deadly sins.

If you are into the mecha stuff then:

Knights of sidonia.

Kurumukuro.

Aldnoah.zero. - Quite liked this one as it was quite tactical.

Plenty to go at on Netflix.

I bought "Ghost In The Shell" after reading how much better than the film it was.

Each to their own, but I enjoyed the film more.

I might watch it again, as I was probably a bit tired when I did watch it, but I just don't think animation in serious films is for me.

I thought Fate Stay Night was quite good. Have also seen the first Episode or two of Elfen Lied. Bit gory but still not bad - have bought it on DVD so must finish it sometime.

Some of my faves:

Please Teacher and its 'sort of' sequel, Please Twins.

Love Hina - a daft harem comedy.

Chobits - set in a near future where everybody has their own personal android. Bit perverted in parts though.

Any of the Haruhi Suzumiya franchise. With the first series you need to forget about the order as issued and watch them chronologically. Disappearence of Haruhi Suzumiya is the best one I've seen.

NGA - the most incomprehensible thing I've ever watched. So why my user name? No idea!

And last but not least:

You're under Arrest - best sitcom ever. Avoid the live action version though. (Come to think of it, you could say that about any anime.)

Must admit I haven't seen any recent ones, however.

I started to get into Anime a couple of years back through Visual Novels (Kawate Shoujo, Higurashi No Naku Ni, If My Heart Had Wings, and Clannad). In terms of films (non-Studio Ghibli) I've seen:
  • Akira - still a stone-cold classic
  • Paprika - inspiration for Christopher Nolan's 'Inception'
  • The Girl Who Leapt Through Time - School-girl discovers she can travel a little way through time. Uses her ability to re-eat her favourite foods, rather than use the ability to enrich herself. Gets a bit more serious, but a heart-warming romance at heart
In terms of series:
  • Attack on Titan: drama / horror. What is left of humanity is under siege from massive humanoids with ravenous appetites.
  • Death-note: psychological drama / horror. A student finds a notebook that bequeaths its owner with the power to kill by writing the name of the victim in the notebook. Cat and mouse between the student and the detective determined to catch him. Reminded me of 'Crime and Punishment' with supernatural elements.
  • Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni - psychological drama / horror set in a small village in the early 80s. Every year during the village festival, someone is killed, and another goes missing. One of my favourites despite that on the surface it appears to be a shoujo (school harem).
  • Shiki Horror. Slightly under the radar, this one. New arrivals arrive in a village, and villagers start developing colds and dying. Slow in the beginning, but stick with it, especially as your sympathies start to twist and change towards the end.
  • Stein's Gate - Sci-Fi time-travelling extravaganza. The plot is really, really tight, but I do agree with BobSamurai's criticism that the characters and dialogue are one-dimensional at best.
I'm still in the middle of watching Attack on Titan and Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni. However, I'm looking towards a drama / shoujo next - maybe Clannad or The White Album

Google 'Anime Recommendations Flowchart', or look for BobSamurai on YouTube and have a look at his 50 anime recommendations.

Beyond Studio Ghibli, are there any suitable anime films/series good for young kids?

My kids (7&8) love the Japanese culture and style, and we've gone through a fair few Ghiblis which we've really enjoyed watching together. (I haven't subjected them to Grave of the Fireflies though!)

I really need to try to get back into it. GITS:SAC got me hooked on Anime in 2006 but it's getting on for five years since I watched any regularly. Not sure why really, I just stopped. It wasn't long after I finished binging Gintama up to before the last series they made, I've got all of it and I meant to go back and start with that, but I never did.

I logged back onto Anidb a few years ago to get up to speed with what I missed and 'acquired' what I'm interested in, but it's just fizzled out again. Between my DVD shelf and drives I've got over 60 shows unwatched, and lots of classic stuff among it.

Got a load of manga (digital) too which I've never really read, though I have finished a few volumes of Vagabond. I also have YKK, everything Tsutomu Nihei has done, GITS, Eden, Bad Company (love the GTO anime series), Zatch Bell, Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle and some others.

Yeah I always liked it for some reason, I haven't seen the last two series yet. I've got Patlabor to see too, which I believe is in a similar vein.

edit: turns out there is more Gintama, I had no idea!! scratchchin

On Amazon Prime, I enjoyed the TV series:
  • Inuyashiki Last Hero
  • Kokkoku, and
  • Kabaneri Of The Iron Fortress
For films, Your Name is almost an essential watch.

And a film in an anime style, but not anime, I really enjoyed April and the Extraordinary World.

Conversely, whilst the manga of Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou is immensely special to me, the anime of it is very disappointing and I would not recommend it.
Edit: And on that subject, I am a little fearful of the upcoming film of Battle Angel Alita, as the manga is almost sacred for me. paperbag

Not japanese, (however very much influenced by), but I can highly recommend the Castlevania series on Netflix, even more so if you are a fan of the games.

-GIT:SAC and the movies

-Perfect blue

Another vote for this. I've watched my fair share of Anime from different genres but this combines martial arts, superheros, monsters and comedy to brilliant effect.

The first season was really good and the second season is apparently finally being released later this year.

Fist of the North Star is another decent classic which I don't think I've seen mentioned.

stuff to recommend

for car stuff:
wangan midnight
Intial D

Ninja Scroll is a classic film, one that got me into anime really.

afro samurai is over stylised (which I love) with an amazing soundtrack, and a good cast. Would recommend it highly.

Also bleach Is a really good series, plenty to go at so should last you a while.

I personally love the dragonball series in all forms, been going since the 80's so again will last for ages (hint: watch dragonball z kai for no filler episodes)

they did a few short series of Devil May Cry, which I would recomend.

more recent, and on Netflix as well was Tokyo Ghoul. Again, a really good series.

One Punch Man is genius.

plus all of the previously mentioned by others smile

I'm currently watching Attack on Titan on Netflix. Loads of Anime on there and a new series of Castlevania is out this month.

As we're on a car forum I have to mention initial D. I think most petrol heads wouldn't be able to watch it without wanting to buy an AE86 afterwards...
