I appreciate if specific brands cannot be recommended on here. What should I look for in a tyre when seeking shed loads of grip?

Since we rempped our 330d the rear wheels often skit and we see the traction light often.

Thanks

The stock answers to grip above others are:

Continental sport contact 5 or 6
Goodyear F1 Assymetric 2 or 3
Michelin Pilot Sport 4
Dunlop RT sport max 2

Go to tyrereviews.com for more info on any, there is a whole section under the tab "all tests" wher you can see all professional test review scores done under back-to-back test conditions from all the major players when you drill down into the specific tyres.

Also you can scan through all tests from the main page to check out each individual test.

If they do your wheel size, Michelin Pilot Sport 4S (NOT MPS4, the non S version is not the same!), I’m sure there is voodoo involved in how well they work smile bizzarrely they also last very well, including track work smile

I second the 4S , have then on my M3.
But the Sport 4 is still great , and probably more widely available.

Outside of Michelin’s , I’ve been impressed with the Pirelli PZeros I’ve got on my X1.

Goodyear AS 2 / 3 were great on the back of my 650, but the Michelin PS4S are as good in the dry, but unbelievably good in the wet.
Both last very well (16 - 20k miles), as most of my commute is on motorways.

Or Michelin Pilot Supersports if you can still get them in the size you need. None of the above will have very good grip in cold damp winter conditions though so are you sure it's the remap and not just the time of year thats the main cause?

Super Sports in the dry were outstanding on an 1800kg car. Can only imagine the PS4S is even better.

Maybe a touch much for something like a 330d though. I'd imagine the regular PS4 is hard to beat as an all rounder.

Goodyear Eagle F1s grip well in cold damp winter conditions. (Not so well in snow and ice).

PS4 give massive traction compared to PSS in the wet or dry but it isn't really a performance tyre.
I needed two rear PSS last year for my E39 M5 but there were NLA at the time so has to slump with PS4 no (S available either). The first 30 ft of driving with them on I knew instantly the car was ruined dynamically, soft vague horrible feel at the back end;I had used the car for 3 years with PSS and was hard wired to their preference for sideways behaviour winkand the precision that went with it.
By comparison PS4 just go in a straight line, hardly breaks traction even in 1st in the dry and the dsc light rarely flashes and the on tap oversteer....gone in the dry.

Wet or slippery roads you can exploit them but they still feel soft and that initial breakaway feel is vague but the outright grip is uncanny. If you like drag racing get PS4!

I have PS4 on mine as the PSS is not longer available and the PS4S is 19" and over only.

I have no complaints about the PS4, both traction and grip and incredible all year round. No trouble in snow, yet handles well in the summer too.

I’ve just put a pair of rear F1s on replacing 3mm PS3 and the extra grip in the cold and wet is amazing. I wasn’t expecting much if any improvement but the goodyears are really good - cheap from tyreleader too.

I have new F1 Assymetricals on our S3 and they are a very good tyre, as much as most people would want with a do it all road tyre; however, the PS4S which we have on the Cupra are in another league, especially as a high performance road and track tyre. smile

They're a good all round performance tyre but I've never found Goodyear F1 Asymettric 2 or 3's to be anything special in cold/wet conditions on my 130i compared to other summer high performance tyres, every car/tyre is different though.

If you want "shed loads of grip" at the moment, you need to be looking at winter tyres designed to work at the current low temperatures.

All of the tyres being mentioned are highly rated (each with their own set of fans who will declare them to be "The best tyre available!"), but they are all currently being compromised to one degree or another by the cold temperatures.

The problem with tyres is, one driver's "great tyre!", is another driver's "I found them mediocre/crap" tyre, and unfortunately, the only way you can find the tyre you like best is by buying them and trying them - Which is not cheap (and there's always the possibility that you replace all four tyres at great expense, and find you still have the same issues due to the current temperatures).

Out of curiosity, what tyre's are on the car at the moment?

Agree with the last post. A remapped 330D in the current weather we've got here (4 deg. and damp roads) would be a problem for a lot of 'summer' tyres and particularly runflats.

I've got Nokian WR3s on my 330i currently and they're performing very well in terms of grip and traction. Once the temperature starts to get into double figures regularly I'll be back on the summer tyres, although for that car it won;t be anything particularly sporty, just a set of Nokian zLines, which are good all-rounders and not expensive.

The remapped 335i is almost ready for a replacement set and that's having PS4 or PS4S. Haven't quite decided yet.

What's probably a bigger cause of traction issues in this weather is the lack of a LSD, but that's more difficult and costly to fix.

Agreed, people need to think about their expectations based on the weather! My 7 series on summer rubber will give nary a chirp from the tyres on a full-throttle launch on sunny July days. The same car will spin its winter rubber at top of 3rd into 4th (so 110mph), on a wet 4 degree Autobahn, but it’ll get to the top of 3rd about 5 seconds quicker on that winter rubber than it will on the summer rubber, which would happily spin up ‘forever’ in the wet.
An LSD certainly helps, but even with 285 section pilot alpin 4 tyres, the M6 is traction limited in this current weather from 4k rpm, almost irrespective of gear (admittedly have not tried this in 7th - but there’s a legal reason why not wink )
OP, By all means buy the best tyres you can afford, but 400ft/lb of torque will defeat most any tyre in the current weather / temperatures.

Another vote for 'wait for warmer weather'. Just be a bit more sensible about how quickly you put your foot down. Or get an X-Drive equipped car so you can win the traffic light GP.

Yes, nothing is going to be very grippy this time of year.

Go straight to Cup2s or NS2R 100/120 when the weather turns, if it ever turns.

I would guess a remapped 330d would give a spluge of torque well over 400ft/lb for a little while at least, it's winter, the roads are greasy, cold and wet it really shouldn't come as a surprise that any tyre will fail to grip in those conditions if you used the throttle like a switch.
