I need 2 rear speakers for a surround sound system I did, they are going to fit into the plasterboard and sink into the web of two RSJ's either side and just behind the couch, we was originally just going to fit surface speakers but he is now saying he doesn't want them sticking out. The fronts are ok because they will be in the corners of the room.

What would be a decent pair of speakers for not a lot of money, the amp cost will probably be £250 or so, maybe Yamaha, nothing too fancy. Also what are the options of buying the front/centre/sub without the rears?

^^^^^^ Wot 'e said.

Monitor Audio will be the cheaper of the two, but also look at the GoldenEar SuperSat3's for shallow on wall rears.

Would this be a full set of speakers, or just the rears? Ideally you should try to match all speakers to at least the same brand to try to keep matching performance and sound.

Unbelievably crude paint sketch

Originally the two fronts and centre were going to be flush mounted into a false wall along with the TV and a little alcove for the sub woofer but at the end of the day he just wanted to get on with things and just dot and dabbed to the blockwork.

The two fronts and centre are fine just as surface mounted speakers but he is now saying he doesn't want the two rears sticking out, the rear left will be fitted in the RSJ above a set of bi-fold doors and the rear right will be in the RSJ holding up the original back wall of the house. Both just behind the couch. The ceiling is pitched towards the bi folds so the RL will be just below the ceiling but the RR will be a fair way down to keep them both the same height. I thought the RSJ idea was the best place for them because of the depth behind.

The layout is kind of like a mirror image of this layout

With the TV where the kitchen units are and the couch somewhere near the dining table.

Have a look at Cornered Audio! Could be perfect up against the RSJ boxing.

Monitor Audio have just (today) announced a cornered speaker design due in March.
