Need new family car, are Diesels out of the question ?
Discussion
Hi all. I'm giving up my Fiesta ST soon and I need a cheaper bigger family type car now. Just moved house, so no money for anything fast. I was thinking full on family with roof box and bike rack lol. The Yeti ticks most boxes cause the DSG box is great but I might like a Landy or Merc/BM estate. Finding a petrol seems to be harder as most are diesels.
Given the kicking Diesels have had recently, is it mad to buy a second hand one now? I'm only talking of Spendng about £11K.
What's your thoughts?

Diesel demand, sales and values are down drastically. So you should be able to search out a bargain.
I've git a 3.0 Tidworth Quattro a6 avant which has taken a massive hit since I bought it two years ago. No way I can sell it without paying someone to take it away effectively.
But it's lush, comfortable, reliable, does everything and gets 40mpg when I try hard.

No you can get a very good diesel for your money, car sales are down full stop diesel sales are down in certain segments of the market but with C Class/Mondeo sized vehicles diesel is still in demand as long as you do the miles then getting a diesel is a sensible option.
With the Yeti be mindful of the potential DSG issues, so check to make sure the fluid & filters have been changed.
Also take a look at the Kuga:

Or the Mondeo they're spacious & unless you need the AWD then they're a better car than both the Yeti & Kuga:

If you do the miles then go for a diesel & there are some nice options out there don't be tempted by the 1.2tsi Yeti it's adequate at best & if you start loading bikes on etc then you'll be working the engine very hard.
If you went for a Mondeo you could 2.2d version which has 40bhp less than the Petrol version but a nice amount more torque.
