I received a text from my youngest son late on Wednesday evening to let me know that there was a passage control for the Glasgow starters in Banbury on 1st February so as I no longer have the inconvenience of have to book time off from work and these opportunities don't come along very often I thought I'd take meander over and take a look.
If you were in the the fortunate position of being able to enter what is probably the most famous rally in the world what would be your first choice of vehicle? A nice pre-war Triumph or Invicta, perhaps an Allard, Ford Zepher, Falcon, or Escort not forgetting SAAB or the inevitable Mini, MG or a big Healey?
In the true spirit of what being British used to mean, eccentricity, courage, single minded determination an innate sense of humour and the ability not to take oneself too seriously I give you the sit up and beg Ford Popular.
The combined age of of the car and crew is 108 years both crew members are older than the car, the car has completed two Le Jogs and a previous Monte.
Rather than I fill this with images of the other 26 competitors these just stood out for me.
To finish a couple of classic warriors.

My father in law won this in 2001 I think - they were driving a Mercedes 220. We actually used the car as our wedding car a few years later! He's done it just about every year since this year he's with a different chap and I think they are 1st in their class - 5th overall at the moment.

I'm afraid the 198 is correct. Incidentally the little car did every single control from Glasgow to Monte Carlo and covered a total of 2887 miles on the round trip, including 600 miles from Orange to Calais in one hit on the way back, followed by 300 miles the next day from Dover to North Wales.The car's 63 years old, so 208 years total?
Along the way it raised over £2000 for Pancreatic Cancer Action to add to several thousand raised on previous rallies for a local children's hospice and Cae Dai Trust.
The car normally resides in the Cae Dai Museum of the Fifties in Denbigh, the entry fees of which go to help support the charity. The car is already entered on next year's Monte Carlo Classique.
