Hi all 👋,

Hope you're all well.

Just had a quickie to see if anyone knows if my local dealer has robbed me off or not. My BMW 650 (e63) just went in for a engine rebuild due to high oil consumption. I was told that new pistons and blocks would be needed. But on the invoice I see no information on new pistons and just one 'block'. Anyone can kindly have a look at the images to see if I'm going crazy or ?

The car does seem to run better but to me doesn't feel like it's running like a v8 4.8L car. Any other owner's experiences on here ?

Many thanks 🙏smile

There is only one block. It's v-shaped, four cylinders one side, four the other, joined at the bottom by the crank.

If they measured the pistons, and they're unworn, then no need to replace. I don't see piston rings on the parts list, though. I presume the 1 x £354 head gasket is a set comprising both.

Sorry i cant really add any advice but just wanted to know what caused the high oil consumption and is it something in hindsight you could have seen coming?

It must have been very high! any petrol BMW I've owned really liked to drink oil, the bigger the engine the greater the thirst.

Would be interested to hear how high the oil consumption was on your 650.

These engines are notorious for oil leaks due to the crankcase pressurising and forcing oil through seals. Normally they just need the CCV (crankcase ventilation system) replaced, intake gaskets, oil separator and a part of the dipstick system.

Obviously it could have been necessary to rebuild the engine if it was genuinely in poor health but for £100 in parts and a spare afternoon of replacing parts, I would have opted for sorting the breather system.

If you start looking at the numbers on realoem, you’ll start seeing matches...

realoem is a US site, so the codes may not match 100% - the last 6 digits of the block do in this example (manufacturing month & year chosen at random)

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=EH12-...

You should be able to use the codes on the invoice you have to match up to the parts.

HTH.

I checked, the “block” on the invoice is a complete block and piston assembly.

Ah. That makes a lot more sense, then.

I do not agree that all BMW's use loads of oil. We have a 2004 x3 3.0 petrol, a 2002 330i convertible and a 2005 650. All use less than 0.5 litres per 10k miles (I change the oil @ 10k miles). My last e38 740 never needed topping up wth oil, even when it had over 200k miles.
As for the 650, mine started smoking @ 138k miles, it was the well known Valve stem seal issue. I had them replaced at ~158k miles. Now on 170k and it has not used a drop of oil in 10k miles.
More worrying is that I do not see a charge for the valve stem seal replacement on the above bills, which should have been done as a matter of course. I hope I have just missed it.

Thanks for the replies and info. Oil consumption was approx 1L / 500-600 miles.

Yes, the bill came to £8k - all under warranty though smile
Unfortunately it looks as if they didn't do the valve stem seals :/ ... but I've done 3000 miles since and hasn't used a drop of oil (says my idrive 🙈)

Was wondering are there any other owners which feels their 650 lacks that thrill factor for a v8 4.8L (acceleration) as Im starting to think is there something else wrong with the car?

Thanks again for any advice / opinions.

Hi,
Performance feels like the figures (0 - 60 in 5.3 seconds), but it is quite smooth. I like the way it accelerates from 40 upwards and it continues to pile on the speed well into 3 figures.
It is not brutal just smooth and quick with the sport button pressed.

Hi gf15,

Thanks for the input. Did some driving around last night, does your rev gauge fly up when accelerating? As I've noticed mine seems to be on the lower end 2000-3000rmp even with a heavy foot... I get all the grunt from the v8 but seems to hesitate slightly.
