Is this a silly idea? (car change content)
Discussion
Hi all,
I currently commute 80 miles a day round journey Monday to Friday. Don’t do much driving at the weekend...most of the driving I do do is with a lab off for walks in the lakes so she’s normally muddy wet on the way back and I pack the front seat with towels for the journey home. I also go camping and end up with a very full car. And again, dog. Wet. Muddy.
Current car - S3 saloon. Few nice extras and slightly modified. 2015. 39k. I own it outright. Worth around £22k ish.
Looking at - 2011ish Range Rover vogue 4.4 oil burner. All around 60k on the clock. More or less a straight swap.
Reason for looking at the Range Rover - I’ve always always liked them. It’s in such stark contrast to my current car that I won’t feel like I’m down grading in terms of speed etc - I’m happy to waft around. The dog can go in the back. Camping stuff can go in the back. It will spend most of its life on cruise control at 80 leptons as does my current car.
Things that are holding me back - mpg? I get 30 out of my S3. Bork factor - although I have a silly theory that due to the nature of my driving - sympathetic, constant motorway driving probably suits it best and I’ve never broken down in any of my cars.
I don’t do Sunday drives for fun anymore and end up driving very very slowly in the S3 over bumpy tracks etc when not on the motorway.
I don’t really want a diesel but it’s probably the best compromise for such a car.
Any thoughts/ideas etc?
I really don’t want a car that’s as nearly as quick as my S3 as I’d feel like I’m missing out where as something like a Range Rover is just so different it won’t bother me... can anyone relate to that thought?

I've always bought all my cars with my heart. I've never needed to ask others' views ask I've always known.
The fact you are asking says to me your heart is not 100% in it.
....but if you fancy it, do it! (most things can be undone)
Interesting point of view... like I say I’ve always liked them but I’ve no idea how reliable one would be starting with me at 60k’ish then putting 15k a year on top. The fact you are asking says to me your heart is not 100% in it.

ETA - I bought the S3 without knowing what it was or having a test drive. It was to spite a merc dealer.

Comment re: interior - I always liked the look of the interior. I know the sat nav etc won’t be as good but meh.
Is the 4.4 derv a good shout?
O and thanks for replies

Saw that but too blingy for me. Like the interior colour though. The 4.4 is a stonking engine in Derv guise.
Senior Partners Missus had one & it went north of 100k with no major issues at all (MY2012)
Have to say SP is something of a pedant with his cars & would always have an oil & filter service midway to the next interval, changed all gearbox & axle fluids at least twice during ownership & hardly a day went by that it wasn`t washed!
Only issue I remember was a BECM that failed causing little or no PAS, cost under £500 to fix.
Not sure about MPG, but I think high 20`s. It did similar weekday miles to you.
FWIW I actually miss it, they currently have a 3.0D L405, being replaced in March by a Velar, neither is a patch on an L322 IMO
Find yourself a good LR indy & service & repair costs are not outrageous.

That a useful reply thanks as have others... Senior Partners Missus had one & it went north of 100k with no major issues at all (MY2012)

Think I’m very close to pulling the trigger mentally.
I’ve a good friend who runs an indie who has serviced all my cars irrespective of make. I’d get it to him straight away for oil/gearbox oil change and happy to do it in between services.
Nice cars but do not estimate how much there is to go wrong, there is lots and lots and err lots to go wrong
It will either be an amazing car to own, or a complete utter PITA doing that milage
Usually they are pretty reliable, put can be off the road for days when there are the odd issue. The media centre kept overheating in a close family members, this caused the car not to start. Took a LR garage a few weeks to replicate the issue and then there was no fix, the only fix was to cover the dash with a towel when its hot to stop the sun heating it up! 2 weeks to look at an issue , then no real fix of the issue on a £70k 7 year old car is pretty poor in my book

A good friend of mine had a TDV8 RR and both he and his wife loved it, & consequently forgave it for its many break-downs. It was their family car, it was pampered and had lots of extra services to try to avoid being stranded on holiday...again.
I couldn't have forgiven it: both turbos at about 90,000, alternator at about 110,000 (well over £1000 because they were in France and had to have one shipped from UK), PAS, ECUs failing to talk to each other...etc. etc.
Subsequently they tried an ML Merc and it broke down, then a RR Sport - ony kept for 8 weeks, a Defender (hated!), and finally, about 2 years ago, they bought an almost new, top spec, Disco, & they love it...and it hasn't broken down once in 30,000 miles!
RRs are lovely to be in and nice to drive, & as you say, entirely different from your S3, so the comparison criteria will be very different, but just don't expect a RR to be as dependable as your Audi.
Have you considered anything else?

Well after thinking about the comments here and doing a thorough amount of online research and talking to my mechanic mate I've done the only sensible thing...
...I've booked in to test drive a C63 estate. Obviously really
Yay - a joyous vehicle. See if you can find one with an LSD....I've booked in to test drive a C63 estate. Obviously really
