Abolish speed limits on all but school roads
Discussion
Who else thinks that speed limits should be abolished on all but school roads at opening and closing time. Limit those roads to 20mph at those times and remove the speed limits from every other road.
Anyone using unnecessarily excessive speed could be prosecuted for dangerous driving and the rest of us get to use our brains to determine an appropriate speed.

And you can't see any dichotomy there at all...?
No, thought not.
I mean in that if you're carrying excessive speed for the area you will most likely end up committing a separate dangerous driving offence the police can ticket you for, at the very least it would eradicate scameras. No, thought not.
The standard of driving in this country is already pretty crap - but you advocate turning the roads into what would be, essentially, a race track.
Brilliant.
What next ?
Remove drink/ drug driving laws and only prosecute if you crash ?
This is a moronic thread - therefore it will run and run.
My estimate is at least 200 replies.
I'm out.
I reckon the op is about 8 - or is posting from la-la land (possibly both).
Brilliant.

I'm not eight. I'm also not stupid enough to believe this would actually work, just raising it as a point of discussion.Brilliant.

Unfortunately morons who can't adjust their speed to conditions/awareness of the road would make it impossible.
I once heard the suggestion that there should only be one traffic offence:
"Driving like a knob". So 150 along that stretch of the M6 between Liverpool and Manchester where you can see for many miles, on clear day with light traffic is fine.
Driving at 50 on an unlit icy country road is not.
The laws don't cope with all circumstances and it would be nice to have a catch-all but it comes down to the definition of "knob" and that doesn't work.

Once again you demonstrate an unprecedented level of dumb arrogance. Anyone using unnecessarily excessive speed could be prosecuted for dangerous driving and the rest of us get to use our brains to determine an appropriate speed.
I was going to say “think this through” but I’m not sure you could use your brain to determine whether it’s day or night, let alone work this one out, simple as it may be.

You may not be 8, but I'll wager your email address ends with "@broadmoor.com".Unfortunately morons who can't adjust their speed to conditions/awareness of the road would make it impossible.
Unfortunately, almost all of single vehicle accidents are already caused by "morons who can't adjust their speed to conditions/awareness of the road".
Many's the time an explanation of how an accident happened started with "I don't understand why I ended up upside down in the same field where five cars also ended up upside down in the last three years officer. I mean, I was only 'doing the speed limit'..."
Too many people already see a speed limit and treat it as a target. Remove speed limits and you remove any form of guidance or limitation to their behaviour. You should be careful what you wish for. You may find that without speed limits a lot of folk end up driving more slowly on certain roads than they did before, because their roadcraft is poor and without guidance written on a stick they have no idea how fast they should go, or how fast is safe to go. Speed limits are useful because they put a cap on people's expectations of how fast other traffic will be travelling when they meet it in either direction.
You idea is criminally insane, and would cause chaos. Never mind other road users like horse riders, moped riders, cyclists, etc. Never mind the lottery that already is trying to cross a road as a pedestrian (that'll get a whole lot harder). Never mind that traffic light "red all ways" phases will have to be longer to account for morons approaching too fast. Never mind that cars already kill and injure significant numbers of pedestrians on footways. And above all, never mind the fact that police cuts are already leading to the loss of roads policing jobs. Just who the juddering f
k is going to police this "not speeding, dangerous driving instead" nonsense you've suggested? NIPs for excessive speed? Easy to police and light on running costs and court time. EVERY 'DD' case would need hours of police legwork to put a case together, a CPS prosecutor, a magistrates court at the very least, and probably a drawn out case involving a judge and twelve jurors when the right to a trial by a jury of his/her peers is reserved by the defendant in most cases. It would be expensive, and cause utter chaos.Please. If you're not already a "patient" at Broadmoor, then do society a favour and hand yourself in at the earliest opportunity...

I take it that you don't think it should happen, just a topic to discuss.
There's a 20 mph limit on the estate where I live, just recently someone couldn't handle the speed they were doing and demolished a garden wall, so if there were no limit on main roads there would be carnage,
A complete non starter

If the roads were overrun with traffic police armed with video cameras and the courts had millions of spare hours to deliberate the merits of peoples driving it might work, back in the real world where there are no police and most people seem to be morons it's a dreadful idea that would lead to absolute carnage. I think speed limits should be set appropriately and not used as an ideological political tool but I am absolutely pro their existence.
