Temperature problems
Discussion
Can anyone help with a temp problem I'm having ?
The temp gauge has been reading low - at first I thought it was faulty as it has been sitting right at the bottom.
However, it shot up to the red when sitting in traffic the other day which suggest to me that the gauge itself is OK but there may be something up with the sender.
The top radiator hose gets hot and I've taken the thermostat out and checked that so I think it's a 'reading' problem rather than something inherently wrong with engine cooling system (although I could be wrong).
The engine has had a rebuild recently when the sender was replaced. The garage have checked their records and reckon it was the correct one that was fitted.
Is it possible that the sender can be 'scaled' incorrectly (voltage regulator)? Also, does the same signal go back to the ECU and if so, could it affect the car's running?
I need to take a day off work to get the car back to the garage so is there anything else I can check beforehand?
Thanks

I had a similar problem a while back, and apparently TVR scale each sender to gauge using a resistor in the line somewhere as various senders werre used.So the chances of a new sender reading the same are slim
Mod wise sell an inline adjustable resistor for a couple of quid, which you can fit inline to rescale the gauge.I got one of these and set it up
Or you could set it up against your otter switch if you know what temp it cuts in at.If you dont know what temp it cuts in at simple remove it,its usually stamped on the base

Had a look, but can't find a resistor near the sender. May be near the gauge but I don't fancy taking the dash out to find out.
The sender measures around 500 ohms just after the engine has started and drops to around 170 ohms when hot. Putting in an inline resistor is therefore not going to work.
Guess I need to track down the resistor and reduce its value, replace the sender or maybe try a shunt resistor. Any other ideas?
