There are two reservoirs just up the valley from me and dotted around the area are perhaps 8-10 concrete columns with metal lids. They’re around 3’ tall and positioned in various locations in relation to the reservoirs, some quite close by and some 200m+ away or even 50m above the water level.

Earlier I walked up to one and opened the lid to find what you can see in the photo - a concrete core with a metal cap and hessian around the outside. I was tempted to turn the handle on the cap but didn’t want to in case something happened or broke!

Does anyone have an idea what they’re for? A quick Google suggests that Kern in Switzerland manufacture/d surveying equipment such as theodolites so perhaps they are trig points for monitoring the dams. That’s all I could think of.

Looks like a mount for a measuring device, theodolite thingy.
Plonk it on an the silver lever moves across to lock it in place.

Can you dig it up and re-position it and see what response you get?
