I just watched the launch and have to say I really respect Elon Musk and what he has done so far, it may be slightly late but he always delivers on what he promises.

I know Musk fanboy gets used on here as a derogatory term but I’m happy to be classed as one now, I love cars, I love space and weirdly I love tunnel boring so in my book he’s doing what any geek (like me) with billions (not like me) would do.

Ditto. True respect for the man, both the engineering and the publicity. Lord knows how he got the money for this, but I'm glad he did.

"Billionaire sends electric sports car to Mars; livestreams whole thing to David Bowie" is not a headline I ever thought I'd see.

Good luck with that.

Musk has received circa $10,000,000,000 of free government subsidies worldwide, all his major new businesses have lost and are losing billions, all his major projects are months or even years behind schedule, while most of his "genius inventions" are just repackaged stuff China or Japan have already done years before.

I’ve seen you post the same stuff across many sections on this site, nobody cares.

Yipper - You might be right, but in a 100 years that and whatever the future might hold for Musk will be forgotten.
Yet his Tesla on it's eternal journey will never be forgotten as it will always be there.

The only way to top Musk's stunt is to have yourself launched into an eternal space journey. I'm sure there are many on here who would support any crowdfunding to send you on your way. But not me. I find you amusing - occasionally ☺.

Yes, he is a massive subsidy farmer. But he has achieved things with all that money where others have failed or not even tried. Even if all his businesses fail, he has already changed the world.

Governments waste billions all the time so maybe they need a man like him to show them the way, also governments usually only give money if they see an end goal - either financial or societal.

They don’t just give it to you for a laugh.

If the US government has invested $9bn in Musks various projects, that's still less than half what NASA's SLS alone has eaten so far in government funding to produce a technically inferior, vastly more expensive to launch, rocket which at best is going to see first test flights in four years' time... What SpaceX have achieved is worth every cent that the US government has invested into it and quite a lot more.

Was the “driving force” of his development of the electric car to save the environment?

What was the carbon footprint of his launch yesterday?

Is this the Yipper guy that everyone tells me is a cretin? I really try to avoid all that kind of stuff as I believe PH can be better than that but just because people think he's a cretin doesn't make him always wrong.

Probably the worst part of his statement is where he's put "just repackaged". Just to repackage some of the stuff that EV is associated with is quite an achievement however association is often as close as it really gets.

Now is not the time to try to convince the world that EM is a popularist front to legitamise the billions of taxpayers dollars that have to be spent to achieve some of the goals which would otherwise be seen as unwisely spent.

We live in a world where Donald Trump is USA president, the UK looks like it really will leave the EU (admittedly with much back peddling) and we will see the end of grid girls in motorsport. All done with the masses believing it seemed like a good idea at the time. So with that background, let's all believe the front end stories about Elon Musk.

It's no crazier than the rest of what's going on in the world.

Surely Yipper could just be beamed out into space on a data packet?

Is putting a payload of under one tonne into space really something to be evangelicalising about these days?

By definition, that would be a waste of space.

He was just proving the tech, it can carry 60 tonnes if I remember right.

Weather or not it was subsidized Elon is the sort of person that makes Tech and Engineering "cool", this is very underestimated trait and is need to inspire younger generations.

What other tech advance since 90's has been a truly "wow" moment?
