Hello,

I am considering getting my 120D remapped by a performance company near me. The Car is almost brand new and has quite allot of power at the moment.

Anyone got any idea how fast this would be after a stage 1 remap? I’m told it would be upwards of 190bhp but who knows?

Why not ask the person doing the remap ?

If you're already happy with the performance then I'd suggest leaving it. Not only that, but your warranty will be void if you get it mapped.

How would we know how much power you'll get from a 'company near you'? As another poster said, why not ask them?

Regardless, I would avoid getting a remap at a local place just because it's local. If you want a proper job, whether it be a custom map or off the shelf, I'd go to the most reputable company within a reasonable radius.

If its nearly new a 120d should have 190hp as standard

Looking online they map to around 225-230hp so it would make it the same as a 125d performance wise (6.3 to 160 and 150mph) it would void your warranty however so personally I would wait until that expires before you mod it.

Perhaps the OP was asking if any owners of 120D engined BMW's have had a map and whether it was worth it, rather than dire warnings about his warranty and that his car still will be slow, they aren't slow by any stretch unless you are comparing them to something really pretty daft, and even then they still do everything, and more anybody could really want from a car.

I have no experience of that engine but have remapped a fair few other cars with generally good results.

Thank you. Clearly your the only one who understood the point of the question compared to a few others.

Very helpful info, appreciated!

I think the advice given so far has been fair.

- BMW will indeed get the hump if a within-warranty car gets its ECU re-mapped.
- The OP should consult with the firm he intends to use, regarding BHP, economy, etc.
- To be fair, the 120d is already a reasonably rapid car (as alluded to in the OP's first post). Is a re-map required?

Maybe some posters are a bit sarcastic, but as long as one has thick skin, the advice is there.

You have several choices really. With most of them you will need to inform your insurer unless you choose option 4.

Option 1. Have a generic ECU flash. It will show up if your dealer checks the car over.

Option 2. Have a live map custom made for your car. This is down to who you choose. A good tuner will go for safe power gains and a linear delivery over someone promising bigger gains and a huge boost spike for a big peak bhp figure. Again this is detectable.

Option 3. Tuning box. Not a fan of these but they are plug and play and if you don’t think the gains are worth the insurance hike you can remove it and sell it .Likewise removable before a dealer trip.

Option 4. Leave the car standard. The 120d is a capable enough car for what it is. Chucking cash at it for not huge power gains might not be worthwhile. People expect too much from a stage 1 map and usually end up saying the car is smoother, more linear in delivery or better on mpg because in reality they can’t feel much difference in power.

Are you purely looking for power gains? If you are bored of the power already, you'll be bored soon after getting the remap done, only you won't have a warranty to fall back on if anything goes pop. It'll never be a fast car, honestly.
