No idea if this is a thing or not but it's really starting to affect me.
Over the last 5 years or so my dreams have become a lot more frequent as well as being really vivid and realistic.
I often wake up after a decent 6-7 hours sleep but feel like crap due to the dream activity. I might have been asleep but I feel
tired and drained because my mind has been super active.
It's affecting me because sometimes the events of these dreams deals with issues I had 20-25 years ago, and all the negative
experiences that occured during that time.
More often than not the dream subject is nonsense which I can recall and dismiss without any thought.
Every month or so one dream will recall events from years ago and the next couple of days I'll be all depressed
because the dream relives all the negative feelings from that time.
I've tried sleeping more and sleeping less. The sleeping less reduced the dreaming but I was falling asleep during the day so not ideal.
I tried being more healthy, less beer, more excercise but this made it worse. I was sleeping better and having more/bigger/longer dreams.
Is this just what happens as you get older?
Is my brain having a midlife crisis and recalling events from my younger days?
Do I need to take up a new hobby and keep my mind more active?
Is this a proper mental health issue and I need to see an expert?

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I think NLP (neuro linguistic programming) could be appropriate for this.
(Very) basically, you spend time recreating/rebuilding/redesigning the original thoughts or experiences (in some detail), until they are completely benign.
Then ideally, the new versions of the experiences overwrite the old, and when the dreams reference the experiences, they no longer exist in their unpleasant form.
