Fine line between three points and none
Discussion
Not sure if someone has posted this before but the search isn't working so here goes.
Myself and someone I work with both got a fixed penalty notice through the post a couple of weeks ago. Separate incidents same police area.
He had an offer to take a driver awareness course instead of three points. I didn't get the option so rang the help line.
Turns out they only offer the course to people who get caught doing 36 in a 30, whereas I was doing 37. My understanding is that in the Thames Valley area they do not touch you if you are at 35 or below.
While I realise they have to draw a line somwhere, it seems a bit harsh that for 1 mph difference I get three points and he gets nothing.
Anyway - just wanted to get that off my chest, filling in the payment form now......

Yes, I agree with your analogy, but I would think that a system of 1 point for 1 to 5 mph over, 2 points for 5 to 10 etc etc would be a lot fairer and gain (some) public support.
The only thing I'm really worried about is possibly losing my licence for a few more mistakes.
Anyway, I'm sure I'm not saying anything that has not been said before on here.
Also, It was fun ringing the fixed Penalty helpline - those people must get hassled all day, sounded ready to go on the defensive as soon as the phone was answered.

Surely the speed awareness course should be targetted at the faster speeder?
My wife (Mrs safe driver, gets gold stars in the companies defensive driving courses) got nicked and opted for a speed awareness course.
She said she would rather have had the points than be subjected to the bull she got off the 'intstructor', who's main aim in life was to get to the Asda cafe for a brew.
The missus was mortified - she had to sit in an Asda cafe ( a place she would normally avoid like the plague given a choice) with a fat smelly muppet who agreed that the speed limit system was pants.
Oh yes, she was nicked for 35 in a 30 near Preston.

Why?
Where is the course held? What does Asda have to do with it? Was she 'forced' to go and have lunch with him or something?
If I got offered a "Speed Awareness Course" I'd take it...and be laughing on the inside the entire time...
A day of putting up with some sanctimonious git vs 3pts - I'm afraid I'll take the git. Totting up is not something I want to affect my licence!
Oh...tav...
1) Go on an Advanced Driving course with the IAM or RoADA. This will mean
a) You always know what the speed limit is.
b) You will not miss seeing fixed speed cameras.
c) You will be more likely to stick to the lower speed limits (and it won't feel like a chore...)
d) You will become much less likely to be caught...because when you DO break speed limits you will be doing so knowingly, malice aforethought and in places you have chosen to do it in...
2) Buy a speed trap detector

With respect Don, I very much doubt if IAM or RoADA training can guarantee items 1a and 1b, but I think you're right with the rest of it.
There's a time and place etc...so find the right situations to enjoy a bit of spirited motoring. I do, well I have so far.
Best wishes all,
Dave.
Yeah it was definitely me, I actually remember going a bit faster than I normally would. It was on one of the hills in High Wycombe where you have to keep your foot on the brake to keep slowing the car to keep in limits.
It was a mobile unit though and I really didn't notice it which is worrying in itself.
Its a fair cop but I am in the process of getting a gps camera thingy so I can hopefully avoid getting the next three points!!
be carefull out there.....
