What sort of costs should i be looking at for a new website - the old one is erm... old and in need of a revamp. Don't need it hosted, just around 7 pages designed and made.

Totally depends on what you need doing to it, and what kind of relationship you want with whoever does it:

- someone found online (e.g. on fivr etc.) - much cheaper
- a professional company - more expensive, but a longer term and hopefully more professional relationship

- are you happy with a template for the design = cheaper
- do you want a bespoke design

- do you have your own photography
- does it need shooting for you

- are you happy with a simple static / flat website
- do you want it on a CMS - and if so, which one - wordpress / Joomla type - or a bespoke one

- do you know what you need (structure / content / why you are building it / etc.)
- do you need someone to work with you to work out how you can use it to grow your business

etc.etc.

costs could be from a few £100s to several £1000s

Pretty much spot on.

Provide a bit more detail based on the above Q's OP and some of us could give you an accurate figures. Also what's the current URL?

I would hope so biggrin as I have been building 'web' systems since before the internet - anyone remember Hypercard and then that fantastic upgrade Supercard?! now those were the days... (sounding very old now!)

OPer, if it's for a business, go with a pro. You've done the first iteration which is always a bit crappy and a make-do, your next one should be better in terms of aesthetics and user-friendliness.

And going with a pro, you should get someone who doesn't go quiet when you need to update things quickly eg due to sudden price changes. They will also give you the passwords you need should you want to deal with other issues.

If you're not already, then I suggest WordPress because you can make simple updates yourself.

Over the years, I've had to help small business owners who come to me with the above issues and a website that's a year out of date. "Send over your login details..." "My what? I'll see if I can contact the guy who did it before, he hasn't replied to the email I sent a month ago and his phone number isn't valid any more." It isn't a scam but it is a PITA.

Would rather keep it quiet if im honest.
Perhaps a better question would have been - any PHers who are professional web designers please post or send a PM. As i clearly have no clue.

Can I just ask - whats an acquired customer worth to you, this will determine the potential and thus the cost. We had one client who will be happy if a new site and marketing get them 1 new client every 2 years others who need 10 leads a day.

Thing is a "agency" will never be as cheap as a freelancer and a sizeable agency will be much more. As others have said 7 pages could be £750 from a young freelancer or over £5k depending on complexity. BUT if that £5k plus marketing gives a ROI of 6/1 are you delighted or no?

Whats the aspirational value?

As others have said, it really depends on what your requirements are. Unfortunately it isnt as easy as saying " 7 pages = £xxxx".

I would say the best thing to do is to Google a few local web design agencies and email them your requirements. You'll get an idea of what they are like to work with when they get back to you (how quickly, what sort of questions they ask etc). The benefit of a local company, is that if you need to sit down with them to discuss things, its much easier.

It's not hard to find someone who will throw together a few pages for you for a few hundred quid. But you'll get what you pay for (sometimes).

Don't forget someone (you) will still need to provide all the written content and imagery.
