I was chatting the other do to my wife about the various things I hope to do in cars and to go to various events this year to see more cars. What it came down to was that I can go and do or see anything I want as long she can come with me because she doesn't want to have a relationship were either I don't get to fulfil my passion or I spend all my time doing stuff by myself.

I decided to test this resolve and asked what if I wanted to race in the Mille Miglia or other rallies. Turns out she would be more than happy to co pilot for me! I was genuinely surprised about how supportive she was of all my mad plans. I probably shouldn't have been but I have watched my Dad fight tooth and nail with Mother to do anything involving his cars to the point he has considered selling them as he struggles to use them some years.

Only point my wife hasn't supported my hobby is when we discuss what to do with my Dads cars when I unfortunately inherent them. This is only because she is worried I will keep them all and then want my own on top which could quite easily take me past 10 cars that won't be for daily use. Which in fairness is probably to many to maintain and store.

So how supportive is everyones other half of your hobbies? Not necessarily just cars.

Far too supportive, she never stops me from doing stupid things! Must have enough life insurance.

My fiancée loves going to all my car related stuff. She doesn't really know much about cars but likes to have a look about and be interested. She prefers classic cars over the newer stuff though.

I've never really had anyone like that before so its a breath of fresh air for me.

Obviously I reciprocate and do stuff she wants to do too so it goes both ways.

My wife is an engineer at Ford amd used to sprint and hill climb so has had enough of cars to fill a lifetime.

She is happy for me to do whatever I want though as long as she doesn't have to come along too.

My wife supports me in my hobbies, even if she doesn't partake in them herself.

I'm not going to subject her to a weekend of looking at old cars that she won't enjoy, and I don't stop her going off for spa breaks when she wants to.

But, we then spend enough time together as a couple doing things we both enjoy to make it worthwhile.

Going out on a limb here with you car wallahs, but the thread is about supportive wives, so I might get away with it.
Being aware of the fact that I spent all my working life with a steering wheel in my hand, my wife is fully supportive of the fact that I avoid driving like the plague now whenever possible.
To that end, when we go anywhere, she cheerfully accepts that I'm going to sit in the back, reading the paper.
On vacations, I'll drive the rental car from the airport to wherever our rented house is, after that I'll go back to closing my eyes and dreaming, while she belts along the Interstate, usually in excess of the speed limit.
The only times that I have to give in, and get in the driving seat, is if we visit any of my French relatives around Lille or Lens, then we'll take her car on Le Shuttle, and she gets a bit hinky, driving on the right in a RHD car, and gets worried when trying to see round trucks and buses to in order to overtake.

My Wife likes to grumble and make out she's not in to my TVR but in reality she is.
Every year I ask her which car we should go down to Spain in and every year I get the same answer, "TVR".

When I wrote off my first Tuscan back in 2009, she was determined that I would have another Tuscan.
I'd told her I wanted a full convertible and that I couldn't afford one but she found one. Apart from that she hates it.

They do all this in the first few years, and then after a few more years, it turns out they "never liked it really". hehe

Friend of mine gets moaned at for pretty much breathing. I don't know how a relationship like that could last.

Supportive wife = great.

Wife that tags along on the coat tails of your hobby = bad.

Everyone needs time to do their own thing.

We've both got our own hobbies, we do a lot independently, I support her, she supports me, we have lots to talk abut when we get home.

She's going to have to get her finger out soon then, 29 years in and she's still on side.

Well as I met the missus at a race circuit.

Then yes the wife is supportive, to the extent that when our daughter was growing up the disagreements were more over who's turn it was to go to an event.

My Mrs had a go on TDM when she passed her test but decided it was a bit too top heavy for her so we got her an XJ600. cloud9

She prefers relatively short rides to specific destinations though, I've not manage to enthuse her in to touring holidays yet.

We do try to mix our hobbies for instance she likes National Trust houses so in the summer we visit them but take one of the non dailies.

Support doesn't necessarily mean being involved I just mean generally not giving you grief for it.

Some of my friends have had to give up cars because there wife has no interest. I do always have to laugh at my Dad a little bit, my Mum has to be the only person in world who when there husband says "Shall we take week trip shopping Milan and Rome tour Italy a bit in the convertible Ferrari." gets told to get lost because of the fuel.

This. I could not cope with a controlling wife, she'd last 5 minutes. I don't do anything that puts our health, finances and well being at risk, therefore I don't expect to get grief about what I do, and I extend that courtesy to her too.

As far as I was aware that's what a normal healthy relationship should be about?
