A few months ago me and swmbo purchased a 2 series gran tourer. I'm quite happy with it but she is now learning to drive, she also suffers with arthritis and she's struggling with the clutch pedal. I must admit holding the clutch down for much time makes my leg ache, i won't sit in traffic with it pressed down and in gear it has to be in neutral with foot off the pedal. Is there any way to make it lighter? i'm guessing the answer to this is no but i'm asking as the other option is buying and running a second car which is an option i don't really want to take. Car is a 2016 218i m sport gran tourer if it makes any difference

This is what happens when she argues against my better judgement and insists we get a manul rather than an auto..........

Unfortunately you are correct, Mrs E was the same when got a 3er she loved the car but test drove a SE & she got an M through work but couldn't get on with the clutch or gearbox when going into reverse in particular.

Basically it is what it is, under the circumstances you may want to test drive an SE in case they are lighter but I doubt it.

A bit 'beyond the box,' but what about a hand operated clutch like a colleague of mine got after his serious accident. I believe it was about 1500£ to adapt.
Might be cheaper in long run than buying , taxing/ insuring a second car? Only issue would be the unusual nature of the 2 series come re-sale but maybe it could be reverted?

Have just returned a 214 after a two week loan and have to say I thought the clutch quite normal, certainly not in any way heavy. It was LHD as I live in France so maybe there is a difference because of that but it might just be worth asking the BMW dealers to check that it is OK, properly greased etc.

Thanks for your responses, pretty much as i expected to be honest.

Regarding the hand clutch idea, that's not really an option i'd like to go down if i'm honest as a new driver it may be a bit difficult to coordinate. Coordination is not her strong point to be fair.

The car has been in to the dealer 3 times since we've had it, once for fault diagnostic, once for warranty repair and finally for a service. At no point have they mentioned anything, although having said that i haven't asked them to look at it
