I was thinking of changing my Skoda Superb for a few months. I have had it from new and done 45,000 miles in 2 years, I just fancied a change. Looked at V60's before Christmas but I had a nagging feeling that it would be too small for family duties. Roll on to end of January when I could send the Skoda back early without penalty and I found my V70 only 18 miles away with all the spec I wanted and more.

It was advertised as a 2013 V70 D5 Auto Se Lux with Driver Assistance Pack and Sunroof. I wanted both especially as the driver assistance pack includes adaptive cruise among other things. Since I have had it I have found that it also has Family Pack, Spare Wheel, Road Sign Assist and High Beam Assist.

Only done about 500 miles but it is so much more relaxed on the motorway than the Superb fuel economy is good for a 215 bhp diesel auto, approx 45mpg. It does feel a bit like an Ocean Liner around town but most of my driving is motorway.

Looking forward to keeping this for a while as I think it represents fantastic value for money. Updates to follow when I have used it a bit more but if anyone needs a decent sized family estate a V70 is worth a look.

There is something about the big Volvos that when you jump into them they just feel right.

Nice

I bought a 04 d5 last sept as the wife and I are planning a family.

While it's ten years older than yours it only has 73k on the clock while the interior is dated she drives really tight and only had one advisory on her mot last week (brake pads low)!

I've grown to like it more than I ever thought I would so in years to come might upgrade to one like this.

Can’t beat a Volvo estate!

In 1999 I traded my M3 in for a 850R estate and we had Volvo estates through to 2016 when my wife ordered a new Golf GTI as she had no need for the Volvo as the kids so much older and one daughter has her own car now. After the 850 we bought a 2 year old V70 R manual from Volvo and ran that upto 80,000 no issues. In 2009 we bought a year old V70 D5 R design in passion red which looked pretty cool for a Volvo. Ran that upto 80k also no problem. You could fit anything in it and no matter how far you travelled in it you felt as fresh as a daisy when you got out. Even though I’m spoilt with a F80 M3 and Mk7 GTI I still miss having a Volvo of some sort.

Enjoy your V70 D5 they are brilliant Cars, good spec by the way SE LUX.

Any update OP, having spent an unhealthy amount of time looking at all the options for estates I think one of these or an E Class is the only potential Mk7 accord tourer replacements.

Virtually all the other estate options seem to be have a smaller volume seats up and/or sloping rear screen which stops you getting those squarer (and road bikes with seats up) loads in the back.

Did you get yours from a AD? Looking on Volvo's website there doesn't appear to be that many V70s about with a sunroof and/or family pack.

Ok, time for an update. I have done just under 2000 miles in 6 weeks in it including surviving the Beast from the East. Fuel economy is low 40's based on a mixture of driving including short local trips and longer runs on Motorway / A Roads.

Overall I am very pleased with the car, it is super comfy and feels so much better put together than my 2 year old Skoda Superb that it has replaced. The engine is silky smooth and the power delivery about 30 mph makes progress effortless.

I chose the V70 over the E class because to me the E class are a bit basic and the seats are not as comfy.

I bought the car from a local trader with a good warranty, as mentioned not many at Volvo dealers have V70's over 4 years old. They do seem to command about a £1k premium from a Volvo dealer.

I was very lucky with the spec of my car as I wanted a Sunroof and Adaptive Cruise. Some have the Driver Assistance pack which includes Adaptive Cruise but I have not seen any others with a sunroof.

Photos below to show car in use after a run down to Kent through Snow, Rain, Wind and anything else the Beast from the East could throw my way.

Any update OP? Considering one to replace my P2 V70 2.4t.

I see you may have had a V60 and P2 V70R in between too?

Cheers!

IAs mentioned I have had a few Volvo's since this V70. I ended up doing quite a bit of mileage the V70 had done just under 100,000 when I sold it and I changed it for a V60 D4 with the VEA engine which meant better fuel economy. When Covid came along I sold the V60 and got a 2005 V70R see thread here https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&... This was a fantastic car, wish I still had it but my mileage was going up gain so needed something more economical so I am now driving a 2015 XC60 D5 Polestar R-Design Lux Nax.

What I would say is that the Diesel 5 cylinder D5 engine is a wonderful thing. Huge amounts of torque and it can be frugal if driven sensibly.

We’ve got a family member whose got a 2012 V70 they’ve had from new (similar spec) & they’re struggling to come up with something to replace it with as it’s been such a reliable car!

We had a V70 P2 2.4T for a few years & ran it from 130-185k miles....our ownership experience was so good we’ve just bought an XC60 D4 (the seats are still just as good IMO wink ).

Thanks for the update! Did you prefer the P3 V70 or the V70R? There are lots if imports around for good money. The same with P3 2.5t's also - one of these seems a logical progression from my P2. Im not sure I would go for a diesel if I could avoid it.

Ive just fixed a couple of bits in my P2 so will keep soldiering on. The gearbox is a bit clunky but going to do another drain and fill and add some Lubegard (had good results before)

It will smoke after a long period of engine braking which is the stem seals, eventually it may burn a valve but hopefully a long way off. I dont want to pay for a head rebuild and fixing them in situ looks too much faff.

Ive got another 35k until 200k so will re-assess then...

I preferred the V70R in as far as it was super comfy, more so than the P3 V70, it had a better sound system and it had the ability to make good progress. The only downside to it was fuel economy / runnig costs.
