Any recommendations? I do a few invoices a month, need to enter in purchases etc and do my annual return, simple stuff for a sole trader.

I currently use an old version of Quickbooks for Windows, I've never used it to its full functionality, really just use for invoicing. It's way too complicated.

Take a look at Bright Book

Whilst I don't use it personally I've recommended it to people in the past and they've said it was good and used it for their businesses.

Just be aware that with Making Tax Digital on its way, whatever software any trader choses to use, it needs to be compatible with the requirements of HMRC - or be capable of being upgraded when the necessary time arrives.

If you are VAT registered, this is pretty urgent.

Why not look at Kashflow for a few £ a month, not Mac specific as it's cloud based.

We used to use it until recently, moved over to Sage One as our accountants prefer it.

Purchase/Sales Invoices and VAT return all very simple. Either will do the job you need.

Sage one costs very little per month and is cloud based.

Thanks for the replies, Brightbook looks interesting.

Yes, I've looked at Kashflow and Sage and also cloud based Quickbooks. I appreciate that are 'only' a few £/m, but I'm a tight git. My accounts are so simple, really two or three invoices a month and my outgoings.

What are the totals like.

If you only had one invoice exceeding £85,000, HMRC will be requiring a LOT from you from next April.

Obviously below the threshold then so need to worry - for the moment.

Gnucash is pretty basic, pretty simple, and does some reasonably decent reporting. I'm using it for a couple of sports clubs and it's pretty quick for what they need.
