How about this then... a bloke in an Elise goes (allegedly) over a junction through a red light. Unfortunately there is a police car right behind him with three cops inside. Bloke gets pulled over. Cop: You went through a red light. Bloke: Oh, I thought it was on amber. Cop: Nope, it was red.
Case gets to court. Its the word of three cops against the word of the Elise driver and girlfriend passenger. Who wins? The Elise driver.

Is this the way it normally goes? Seems a bit harsh on the cops.

Not unusual. It depends on the day who the Magistrates believe.

I gave up a long time ago trying to second guess the Bench and what their verdict would be; when you think you've a cast-iron case, they acquit, and when you think you're getting a hiding, they convict (and vice versa).

You never can tell, but as a rule of thumb, with most of our "customers", if they do get off, "they'll come again".

Oh, I don't know. When you reach a certain age, words like that are comforting - Streaky

Do you have any more details? Where the lights actually on amber or at red? Was the driver a celebrity or unknown? Did the magistrate give reasons for the decision?

It does seem rather odd. The view of 2 police officers is considered to be sacrosanct, is it not? So 3 should be even more cast-iron. What did they say that would cast doubt on their judgement?

Only yesterday evening, I was 2nd in line at a controlled crossroad, patiently waiting for our phase. Out of the blue, driver in front pulls away across the junction. I checked all lights controlling our junction, all were firmly red. I braced for the inevitable - thankfully said numpty got lucky, but was 1 second away from a nasty (drivers side) t-bone.
all within the speed limit of course

Be careful out there

Maybe the junction was equipped with a red light camera that wasn't tripped by the Lotus? That would negate the cops' testimonies I reckon.
