Menzies (usually pronounced Meng-eez) is indeed a fine Scottish name.

So why then is Rt Hon. Sir Menzies Campbell CBE QC MP deputy leader of the Liberal Democrats and a once proud Scotsman now calling himself 'Ming'.

Is this a genuine attempt to foster better Anlgo-Sino relations?

Or is e shopping for a mail order teenage Thai bride?


Or is he living a fantasy life as as the arch enemy of Flash Gordon, intent on conquering the universe?

erm, I think you'll find it's a fine FRENCH name- going back to the norman invasion etc. As far as I'm aware, it has always been pronounced (phonetically) "Ming-ez'.

When I was a kid in Glasgow, that was the name of a chain of WH Smith style stationers. Are they still trading under that name?

It may have been Ming-ez in the Gorbals mate, but the BBC always used to pronounce it Meng-eez.

BTW I remember John Menzies newsagents, but I think they ditched their High Street staionery shops a while ago, but I understand the company is still involved in Newspaper distribution and in aviation.
