Hi All,

im looking for a steer in direction, I have been offered a 1992 Pre Catalytic Convertor TVR Griffith 400. body looks immaculate, engine clean and new outriggers..

Itself has covered 52550 miles, but I have been offered this at £5400!

What is the general thinking?.... to good to be true? I know very little about Griffs so i would welcome your thoughts,

Regards,
David

If it is as described then too good to be true.

Do you have photos or any further details?

That looks just like mine.

To put it into perspective I have just looked at pistonheads and auto trader.

The cheapest Griff in the country at present is £8k and that is described as a project needing engine work and outriggers. The next cheapest is 16k, there are a couple at 17k, and the rest are at 20k, going up to above 30. The early ones do tend to be a bit cheaper, but with outriggers and that mileage I would expect £20k give or take a couple of grand depending on condition.

Go and have a look. Keep your eyes open and check everything. If it is all genuine, then you have a bargain. If you are at all suspicious, walk away. Whereabouts in the country is it?

Yes I had seen the 5.0 project on sale - but have just purchased a project Chimaera.

But the owner of this had come back a few weeks later - after I had originally messaged through Ebay but at the time it was listed for 8k. posted and taken down within 48 hours. Its in North Scotland..... but if that much of a potential bargain - worth a road trip!

Definitely a potential bargain and worth a road trip.

I would be a little concerned that it may be too good to be true. Anyone genuine who owns it will have a good idea how much they are worth and if not it doesn't take much to look at others for sale. If you had to get shot quick and took it to an auction you would get more than he is asking. So why is it so cheap?

Phone the seller. Have a chat. Find out the story.

If you can get the reg no. look at the MOT history and do an HPI.

If its all good, then get to Scotland ASAP to grab it before anyone else does. (or send me a message & I will buy it).

A lot of classified cars on ebay are scams. They pop up at unrealistically low prices for a few hours until ebay are notified. It happens so often, I'm surprised how many ebay users' details and log ins are being compromised. TVRs seem to be a particular target.

They usually have an email address and little in the way of description. I'm not saying it ISN'T genuine but be careful of parting with any money before it is actually seen.

Just do all possible checks first, thats cheap and quite often there is a reason for that. Many EBay cars are advertised in North Scotland, the owners on the rigs, you cant see it but we can ship it to you.. Etc etc, Hope it works out.

At £5400 and at the arse end of the country, with no offence intended to the scotch, or to the OP, I'd guess that's a scam.
Free delivery, 2 weeks return policy and full ebay protection - note in the real world there is zero ebay protection on ebay 'motors' - I have had full email conversations with these people. Google ebay camper van scam.
At £5400 if you don't want it I'll give you 7k for it biggrin

eta it is TVR999K photos that have been used I think - I have found an advert - "1992 Pre Catalytic Convertor TVR Griffith 400 FLAT Nose Very Rare Perfect For Car Collection Quick sale price £8,000.00 !! Selling on behalf of a family member."
Chuck the email address of the seller from that advert into google and the top google link is an ebay ad. Click on that and it ain't there on ebay - that's exactly what happens to scam ads when ebay remove them - they disappear. Google will still get them, but then you go on ebay and ... nothing. I have helped to take down thousands of these ebay scams - this one looks very very fishy. Photo location is the same as the photo above - same car, same location. £5400 is right in the middle of their sweet spot for pricing - usually 4-6k. Just the right amount to cash out of a bank account that some east european was brought over to the UK for 24 hours to open.
I hope I'm wrong - but please tread carefully.

The old adage of if it sounds too good to be true it usually is. Be very careful, most likely a scam

Thinking it was probably a scam I thought I’d go along with it, so I pm’d the seller. This was at the end of last year.....he said that the car was in Inverness, so I asked if I could come and see it as I was only a couple of hours away, he replied that it was not possible as he was in Germany....all very dodgy so beware!!

I dont think the car ever existed.

They were just hoping to catch someone so desperate to buy at that price they would pay in full without having seen the car.

I received an EBay alert this morning , but when I clicked on the link it had been removed....same car and same photo. I assume that EBay had removed it .....if so glad they’ve caught on to this scammer!,

If you search the classic car section, there'll be 25 - 30 plus cars starting at 99p. Mostly this type listed as' quick sale' with an email address only. Almost always get quickly removed.

I'm surprised how many ebay log ins have been hacked so that they can be used. Some of them have a lot of feedback and it must compromise their business. I can only imagine there are bots of some description guessing passwords because the accounts are various.

I'm not saying it isn't N Scotland but my first thought when I saw the picture was that it was taken in Torbay (Devon). Could be wrong, though.
