Hi folks

Just bought a 2013 320D tourer. 31k miles and full BMWSH. It’s from a car supermarket as oppose a BMW dealer.

It doesn’t come with warranty, and I’m considering do I buy an aftermarket warranty. The supermarket (fords of winsford) are offering me a 3 year warranty from a company called motorway UK, underwritten by AmTrust for £600. Cheaper than the main competitors and covers a fair range of stuff. Should I take the risk and avoid it and save the cash to pay for any repairs if something goes?

Thanks

I'll probably do about 10k per year. Sorry it's Motorway Direct PLC, underwritten by AmTrust. They do sell general aftermarket warranties but the supermarket I've bought it from say they've have an agreement with them for a bespoke one.

It covers:

Engine
Timing Belt
Cooling System
Engine Management
Gearbox
Clutch
Transfer Box
Propshafts
Wheel Bearings
Steering & Suspension
Brakes
Electrical Components
Turbocharger
Air Conditioning.

Excludes:

Bodywork, paintwork, wheels, tyres, interior and exterior trim, exhausts, DPF, wiring, alarms, immobilisers, central locking, incar entertainment, sat nav, seats, batteries.

It seems good to me for the price?

Try getting a quote from https://www.bmw-warranty.co.uk/Start

I've only ever had the BMW one and used it a few times now on 2 cars. No quibbles.

Unless these aftermarket warranties have changed in the last couple of years, beware of the following.

They wont cover oil leaks, they wont cover anything that wears out due to usage, they often say stuff has to break/fail.

Like a driveshaft joint, they wear and become noisy, but they'll only cover it if it breaks.

Engine problems, if you have a hose split and the engine overheats as a result, probably wouldn't cover that one as the hose isn't covered.

We used to say "not worth the paper it's written on"

So someone educate me, have they changed?

I had a reasonably good experience of years of cover with Warranty Direct, and they will cover wear and tear. They paid for worn out suspension parts on my 10yr old Merc, including new arms where MB had previously just replaced the bushes. That claim alone was a whole years premium. However they changed hands not long ago and I got the impression things were changing.

On the cover the OP is being offered, I'd regard it as a safety net to be used if all else fails. It should catch any big failure but you're always going to get issues if it's not cut and dried. "It's making a funny noise" isn't going to get you anywhere.

I think the other thing in its favour is it's being offered by Fords of Winsford - they have a very good reputation which they will want to protect so there's always the chance to try and get their support in a dispute.

The only warranty I'd consider is the Mondial warranty, which is what BMW provide. It's about the only one I've seen where they will ensure the car is fixed for good. Most warranties out there IME aren't worth the paper they are written on.
