Currently suffering with a very painful ear infection.
Went to the doctors on Weds morning and was given a spray which I have used since but absolutely no improvement.
Taking some cuprofen painkillers which were the strongest the pharmacy had to numb the pain.
Overall I’m not one to take time off and be a snowflake but this is very painful. Any idea how long these take to clear up ?

Please make sure you get it checked out to your satisfaction.
I had an ear infection and was advised to see if it cleared up on its own by the doc.
Unfortunately it didnt and I lost the hearing in that ear and ended up with tinnitus as loud as having the car window open at 80 mph all the time.
I'd hope thats not the case for you but if in any doubt seek a second opinion.

As odd as it may sound, same happened to me. Although I had no pain with the 'infection'. My urgent referral to a specialist came through after about 3 months, by which time the damage had been done and was irreversible.
However I had sudden sensorineural hearing loss which may be different to what you've got. Nevertheless, go to A+E if you have to if you're worried.

Similar for me. I had a series of ear infections and chose to ignore it and just take painkillers for the pain. The infection damaged my auditory nerve leaving almost entirely deaf in my left ear (other than tinnitus) and temporarily cost me my sense of balance.Please make sure you get it checked out to your satisfaction.

I wish I had got it checked out.
Unfortunately it seems in some situations what could be saved is overlooked - where a quick course of steriods may have resulted in a different outcome.
I kept getting asked to leave it and by the 6 month period a different doctor said it should have been treated with some urgency and although I then got quickly to a specialist the damage was done.
After 2 years of no improvement I now realise this is it,

So most outer ear infections will get by themselves in about 7 days. Those which don't would be treated with topical antibiotics (drops). If there is any discharge (pus) coming out of the ear then the drops probably won't work and you need to have it cleaned out by your friendly local ENT urgent referral clinic (me or my colleagues in central London)Went to the doctors on Weds morning and was given a spray which I have used since but absolutely no improvement.

What others have described with sudden onset hearing loss (especially without pain) is a totally different condition and should be treated as an ENT emergency. You should get steroids for 1 week and have baseline and hearing tests after 1 week. Despite the steroids a fair percentage do not get better. The two should not be conflated.

If it's going on for longer than a week then get it checked out and maybe ask for it to be cleaned out and an ear swab sent to Microbiology.
You'll prob get some antibiotics and the culture result will confirm if the organism is sensitive to the antibiotic prescribed.
