Gone Home - wow
Discussion
I played it the other day after having downloaded it a few months ago when it was on offer for nothing. I love a good story driven game and I'm not averse to a good walking simulator like Dear Esther, but gone home was just utter rubbish. It starts off trying to form some sort of spooky ghost story vibe which never takes off and the segue from a slow burning mystery into a lame teenage love drama kills it stone dead.
The final icing on the cake is the speed run tactic of going straight to the hidden room under the stairs, collecting the attic key and going straight to the final diary just highlights how lightweight the gameplay in between the start and finish is. I also thought the juxtaposition of true-to-life 90's style props against the cod-gothic mansion was a misstep. The thematic reveal of the game (that there are no ghosts, just skeletons in the closet) then seems to jar badly as the soap-drama storyline clashes with the haunted house vibe.
Yeah, I thought it was complete crap. It could have been worth playing, if it had a decent story to go with it.
