Warranties

A subjective topic for sure.

I am about to buy a 997 and have allowed myself to become fixated with it needing a Porsche warranty, it is coming from an independent. The car has had an 111 point inspection done with Porsche this week and there are some items of work which need to be done, it then needs a major service with Porsches (despite being serviced 1k miles ago it was performed by an independent not Porsche) then there is the cost of the 2 year warranty itself. The costs are adding up quickly.

My question is - is there really no credible alternative to the Porsche warranty? I appreciate 'you get what you pay for' but the cost of entry to the Porsche warranty is steep in my mind. That said if there is a catastrophic engine failure this might be cheap....agghhhhh!

My current school of thought is spend some money to fix up the key points identified and then buy a non Porsche warranty - asusming there is a credible one to buy.

Personally, I'd either buy the Porsche warranty or none at all. By all accounts the Porsche warranty is head and shoulders above all other offerings, but you do pay top dollar for it!

The warranty might appear expensive but so are the repair costs.

I chucked a warranty direct warranty on mine. Had to have it inspected but nothing so thorough as the 111 point. It's not perfect but it mitigates something big going bang!

I didn't have 'N' rated tyres on and couldn't see the point of needlessly replacing them. Ridiculous really but that's worth a thread of it's own....

Warranties are an insurance product. Those offering insurance have to make money (or they go out of business). So on average warranties cost more than they offer. In thirty years of driving and riding I’ve paid a lot more to insurance companies than I’ve managed to get back (I am happy to continue with that trend!)

Question for you is what would happen if something did go wrong? Would you have the cash for repairs? Is the car bought on finance so you could end up having an asset worth less than what you owe?

Having the Porsche warranty does, I think, make the car easier to sell, if you think you might have to offload it.

I bought a997.2 just recently from an OPC and did get the warranty. However it wasn’t the warranty that sold it to me rather the car was in great condition and that the dealer had to do a lot of prep to be able to put the warranty on eg new discs all round, new tyres. Also for them to do a full service. Apart from depreciation and some rear tyres I am hoping there are no additional costs for the next two years.

For me, it’s peace of mind and to be totally honest, the fact a 1-year OPC warranty of c.£1,300 isn’t a significant amount against a £60k ish car (997 GTS). Even after 4 years of ownership and 2 warranty renewals I’d always take the warranty. Have had probably 15% of my warranty outlay in actual warranty work so the argument of saving the money is valid and I don’t deny it. But as I say, the peace of mind is what I’m after.
