Just got back home and on the way an old boy clipped the o/s middle and rear of my car.
It's a situation of two lanes merging.
I'm in the left lane, he was in the right lane merging into mine.

We pulled over and I had a look around his car and mine. It's nothing more than a scuff that can be taken out with T-cut, and the same on his front n/s wing.

We chatted and we came to the conclusion that it would be 50/50 and rather pointless to put this though the insurance companies, given the superficial marks.
I was happy with that and we didn't exchange details and went on out way.

I do have his car make/model and reg, would it be worth telling my insurance company of the incident? Or should I just let it be, hoping that he would keep to his word and not try and make a claim?
What could happen if I don't inform the insurance company?

The worst that could happen is that he reports it and your insurance company then contact you to ask if there was an incident and for your version of events.

There’ll be many more along soon to tell you that your insurance will be void and that you’ll have to declare a cancelled policy for life soon, but that’s all paranoid waffle. They’ll then quote paragraphs in your policy booklet to support their argument, but again, none of it will be enforced.

Personally, I wouldn't bother.

Your insurer probably has terms and conditions that say you must report all incidents no matter how minor or who is at fault, so a jobs worth would report it, but if the scuff is going to polish out and both people were happy to leave it, it is no more of an incident than getting bird st on you car, I would definitely not report it.

An old guy?

I'd trust him to do what you agreed (i.e. nothing) far more than I would someone younger.

Forget about it.

Nope, not at all. Snakes come in all ages.

You'll often find older people take advantage of the inexperience of young drivers and stereotypes to manipulate the outcome of accidents.

The parents most probably.

If it's only going to be the Insurance company calling me, then i will just leave it.
Tried some t-cut, and it's removed the scuff.
There is a light scratch that's white, but it's nothing major.
Cheers all.

Yes, sounds like it will be OK.

In my experience this sort of arrangement only tends to go wrong when the driver of the other car isn't the owner, so then the driver starts a work of fiction to try to avoid getting a hard time from the owner!

Hope nothing further happens OP! thumbup

Report it to your insurance? Do you want your premiums bumped for the next five years? Are you off your face?

I would notify them just in case.

I had a similar incident happen 18 months ago. We both pulled over - minor damage to my car (ie scuffs that polished out). Exchanged details but as my car is old and the scuffs polished out I didn't bother following it up. Other party was a delivery van - no significant damage either. Took photos of both vehicles just in case.

Never heard from the fleet manager of the other company so decided to leave it.

4 months later received call from my insurers regarding the incident. Whiplash claim.....

No claim about damage to my or other driver's vehicle, but other driver decided to claim for whiplash. My insurers told me they don't normally pursue, but as I had photos to show damage, and after an inspection by an assessor of the (little) damage to my car we are going to court to fight it.

This happened in December 2016, still not resolved. My premium went up at date of renewal, but was told I would be refunded the difference if we won the case.

Fortunately I have all the legal cover, no-claim protection etc, but that it takes 15+ months to resolve is ridiculous.

So if it happened to me again, I would notify just in case there is something in the small print that says they won't cover if you don't notify.
