Hi, new to the forum so go easy!

Test drove an automatic 220i M Sport Coupe yesterday and seemed an extremely fun ride and potential purchase. Are there any owners in here, or any comparisons with the 218i, is the extra for the 220i warranted?

If people were in my position, 23 years old, reasonable income, looking to purchase/lease my first 'proper' car but not necessarily a practical or sensible ride and vehicle as usually only two people in the car at most, would they see the 2 series coupe as a good starting point or would you head somewhere else, is there better value for money/ bang for your buck elsewhere?

Tanks guys much appreciated in advance

Friend has a 235 and I would say the interior is quite low rent, not something I would be looking to get.

If you must lease a premium car then try the SLC, it’s quite nice inside and if you only need two seats ...

When I take my M3 to the nearest mountain road there always seems to be at leat five or six Fiesta STs as the car of choice for younger driving enthusiast. It’s as the journos say , great bang for your buck. And fun.

But a BMW 220 is a lot classier and I guess still reasonable on insurance compared to the bigger engined versions and premium hot hatches; and they’d be more expensive anyway.

I’m not totally wowed by the interior , but then I’ve driven much more expensive cars and I’m older. If I was in my twenties (and you asked for empathy) I reckon I would be and my peers would be too.

So unless you come back and say you’ve really a bigger budget (and insurance is no issue) as you liked driving it , it’s a logical choice to fit your circumstances.

But as this is Pistonheads I’d still say , always see if you can afford a bigger engine before you finalise your decision wink

Interior is OK on these, nothing special but not terrible considering it's pretty much the bottom of the BMW range. Preferable to a Mercedes A Class or a Fiesta in any event.

The 2 series is a pretty car and drives well. However, as others have mentioned, it is badly let down by a very cheap interior.

If you only need two seats, why not look at a Z4? It is much higher quality and there are still a few pre-reg examples around at very attractive prices – a £40k car for less than £30k.

Isn't this a slight exaggeration ?

I had a LCI M135i and the interior felt on a par with a current Golf, at least. I would not call that a very cheap interior, Yugo style.

It felt of higher / quality / fit / build than an older Z4 IME (but perhaps not than the current shape).

Very much over exaggerated, but these days everything has to be amazing or terrible. Nothing in between, just more and more hyperbole.

The interior is fine, much better than a Ford, not as good as an Audi. Plenty comfortable enough, ergonomically sound and best of all, no touch screen but a really simple yet brilliant way of controlling the tech.

It's not hard to better the interior of the earlier Z4 though, my Z4M was a massive disappointment for me interior wise. Although I've had three E9x 3 series and they weren't much to write home about interior wise either.

The great thing about Bmw's is that they drive really well...so you tend to turn a bit of a blind eye to their interior failings.

My Z4m's interior is great. Done more than 100k and still would shame many newer cars.
As has been said, interiors not the best compared to some but the drive is surely why we buy the marque.

The second generation Z4 (E89) has a significantly upgraded interior compared to the first generation, which was in any case still vastly superior to a 2-series coupe interior.

GT86? Holds value very well and is more special. 200 series feels like a 100-series behind the wheel, although looks better.
