Mk5 R32 Handbrake

Parked the car at work yesterday only to find a couple of hours later the car had rolled forward into another car. Fortunately no damage done but I get the car into local garage and they say the handbrake is fine? They had it on the ramp and everything checked out. I’m always adamant that I pull the handbrake fully up when ever parking and I was in the car for a couple minutes with the hand brake on before leaving to head inside.
People at work say never to pull the handbrake fully up as this wears the cable out while the garage says different? I’ve resorted to leaving the car in gear while parked up to eliminate the chances of this happening again (always parked in neutral before, never been told different). Also someone told me to check if the cable is stretched, there are a couple of screws to unscrew near the leaver? Can anyone shed any light on this?
