Jack of all Trades, Master of None: MK7 Golf GTI
Discussion
So after much debeate between Two Cars vs. One Car, I've settled for the One Car approach.
I currently have a lease for a 2017 A3 1.4tfsi. I planned on getting a weekend toy, but that idea got blown away by a mortgage.
Yes, the A3 is great at fulfilling its daily role but since we are settling for one car, the punch is missing.
This brought me to the Mk7 Golf GTI:
- Practical
- Big aftermarket support (I do like to modify my cars and make some sutil changes...not push 700whp)
- "Fuel efficient" (90 kms daily)
- Great interior
- Sleeper looking exterior (a good thing!)
Now the GTIs available locally only come with the 6-speed DSG and no Performance Pack. The one that fits the bill is a pre-facelift model that was leftover from 2017. I managed to negotiate the price down and there is little to no difference to what I pay already for the A3 on a monthly basis. It would only change from a 24 to a 36 month plan for the GTI.
I technically shouldn't be looking at changing my lease since I am only half way through my 24 month plan, but I think I've found a gem for the price given allowing me to make the jump from a "basic model" to a "performance car" for less rather than trying to make the same jump in a year when my lease is up. (more A3 turn-in value today vs. 2019)
TL:DR - Is the MK7 GTI with no Performance Pack worth leasing for 36 months? Is there another Jack of All Trades Car that I am missing? Talk me into or getting out of the GTI
Thanks!!
