My sister got a 1.6 FSI Golf (Mk5) as her first car. Paid £2400 and the insurance is comparable to 1.2 and 1.4 litre alternatives, so I wouldn't rule out a 1.6, especially a normally aspirated one.

Thanks, I'll make sure to check them out, I like the idea of a Polo or Golf as I hear it's not too difficult to retrofit a nice unit into them.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I’d rather stay away from convertibles, they aren’t my thing.

I've heard similar, by the sounds of things it's just a canbus upgrade and then you can retrofit an RCD330. You can usually pick one up for ~£200 from China, just make sure it's not the Desay model as they don't get firmware upgrades.

The RCD330 has Bluetooth and a microphone built in. They usually come with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well. Quite appealing really, comfortable little run around with all the modern tech for under £3k.

Thanks, I’ll look into this further, I’d been sold on the 8th Gen Civic due to its tech however now I think I may go for a golf and retrofit a unit into it. That Apple CarPlay sounds great, thanks for all the help.

I think I’m sold on the Golf now, since I am able to easily retrofit a unit that will have Apple CarPlay enabled. Thanks anyway.

Not sure you need Apple car play, when I first passed my test I barely played the radio. I spent most of the time practicing cornering, driving the car as fast as possible to the limit (including speed limit) and generally learning road handling skills.

Use the first car to learn how to drive, not spend most of looking down putting your grime music on!

Hahahahaha, thanks. I would use it for music now and then but more for the Sat Nav and the Handsfree kit. Would hope to change the car after three years and take the unit with me incase I got another Golf or Polo I could install it into. The unit I have in mind for this car is less than £200 which is pretty cheap compared to units for other cars I’ve seen.

Be wary if you're getting a Chinese unit as they're hit & miss sometimes spending a bit more is a better solution, all the cars below are insurance friendly & in some cases the bigger engine is just as cheap as the smaller unit.

All the cars have headunits that are easily changeable so finding a unit to go in will be no (if it's a double din I can recommend the Pioneer SPH DA120, you can find used ones on Ebay) problem.

Kia Pro C'eed 3 (Nice Spec Half Leather etc & low insurance)

Alfa Mito Veloce/Turismo/Lusso (with outputs from 95-155bhp take a look & see what's insurable for you)

Wow, that’s a lot, thanks for the help. I will be sure to look through in detail. I completely agree with what you said about the units, I have seen quite a few reviews on YouTube of the RCD330, all of which say it’s a good unit and show it’s quite an easy install, alongside not being overly expensive.
