X3 jap import - n52b25a (2.5) - suddenly rough and stalling
Discussion
Hi
We live on a tiny Caribbean island, so these days stick to reliable older 4x4s, but after Irma trashed the wife's Terios, she went large and decided on an X3 E83, so we imported from Japan. It's a common route to cars here with barely any dealers, and local motors taking an absolute beating on the vertical hills and potholed roads, not to mention bad servivcing and death wish drivers.
we got a X3 E83 2007 2.5, with the n52b25a 218BHP motor, which arrived 4 months later...
I've just picked it up from the port, and after driving perfectly for around 30 mins, was parked up on idle, with AC running, then it out of no where started juddering heavily at tickover, really rough, and wouldn't rev.
I restarted it instantly, and still the same. Thinking error codes from a bad sensor, I pulled the battery for 30 mins, whilst I googled possible issues; VANOS, bad crank position sensors, blown PCV valve, and even apparently bad valve cover gaskets - seems this engine is a lot fussier than my last E36 Evo...
on re-connecting the battery, now it won't start at all!! Turns over but won't fire.
- not starting now might be related to me disconnecting battery and a separate issue - any known reasons for this e.g. immobilizers needing resetting?
- re: rough running, if I get it started, looks like a very light seep from valve cover gasket, and also possible around a sensor in top of rocker cover
- I've heard leaky vacuum hoses might also be an issue; the engine is jammed in tight, so any idea on favourite spots for this?
I've got 2 hours to make a car barge, before we leave then car on the wrong island and have to walk home. Very unhappy Wife = unhappy life..... help me!
