I've used Photobox for many years but have never really considered any others -

Who would you recommend at a similar price point?

When I'm after something larger and more special, I'll use the best local printer. Interesting places, great people, reasonable prices.

DS Colour labs. No need to go anywhere else, ever, unless you need your prints on the same day.

I'll echo the points above, DS Colour Labs for general stuff and local printer for fine art prints.

I've also used Photobox over the years.Have been pretty happy with them.

Never got around to using Costco - although they are supposed to be pretty good from all accounts.

And, until a recent email came in, I didn't know that 7 Day Shop also did printing - don't know if they're any good, but some of the kit - including genuine memory cards - I've had from them over the years have almost always proved great value, so I'd be interested if anyone has tried them out yet.

Be inclined to agree that a really good local printer would be the way to go for anything special - you tend to get what you pay for, like most things in life.

What's the wisdom on larger prints vs canvas? I want some for my walls but photo prints at big sizes get scary expensive vs canvas.

How does canvas work for prints, like landscapes?

Worth looking at edge printing - the image is printed onto a piece of MDF which is bound at the edges. You get a sharper print than most canvases I've seen.

Just to update from my OP.
I did a small test batch with Photobox, Snapfish and DSColour -

For me the results were:
1. DSC -
2. Photobox (close behind but not as sharp)
3. Snapfish - less colour, contrast and sharpness

That's the best way to do it! And same results as a similar test I did a few years ago.

Couple years ago I took a punt on a Groupon Deal for a photo canvas.

I was, and remain, really pleased with the results and have ordered more subsequently.

Deal seems to be always on:

I went for 30"x20", which is actually more than a 36" diagonal

They go bigger too:
